Amp or speakers dead?

I replaced my front door components with JL audio components about 5 years ago (never noticed any sound improvements). Now I am not getting any sound from them. The JL components came with an external crossover which i have installed in the door junk holding area. My thought is to try to unhook the JLs from the car audio and wire them to another stereo, to see if they r blown. If I find they r not blown, then I would assume the factory amp is blown (r channels blown sounds strange?). Which leads me to this; I could get a oem amp replacement and throw that in there without much headache. Or, I could invest in a nice power amp, with a separate sub channel, buy a line level adapter/converter (audiologic has a few nice ones), run the radio signal into the converter, then to the amp then to the speakers (assuming they aren’t blown). This would be time consuming with a lot of wire running. But it would really make for a nice system. (I prefer rock guitar music. I generally use Van Halen’s song Tattoo to dial in my audio sound.)
please advise.

Both sides not working? Stopped working at the same time? Any sound from the sub?
You gotta trouble shoot to try find out what's not working then you'll know which route to take.
No sound at all from anything sounds like the amp.
You could disconnect a JL speaker from the crossover and connect it straight to the amp output (basically bypassing the crossover) and see if you get sound. If you get sound then the crossover is bad.

Just an update. I bought new replacement crossovers to see if that was the problem. Still nothing. I am thinking the channels from the amp are toasted.
