Is it worth getting the extended warranties.
My wife's RDX's 4yr/50K warranty is about to expire, the car is currently at 4 years/40K miles. We just quoted for plan G58 (5 years, 80k miles, Coverage through 6/23/2016 or 80000 miles) for $1,325 with $0 deductible. She doesn't drive a lot, we live only about 4 miles away from her work place, so I figured 40K in 5 years should work for us.
Do you guys think it's worth buying? The car seems to work fine for us so far, we only had to get one of the rear strut replaced which was covered under warranty, but can't really predict what's going to happen in 5 years.
I am a little hesitant because the power train is covered by the original warranty in the next 2 years/30K miles, so I am basically paying 3 years/10K miles on power train + 5 years/40K on everything else http://www.curryacuracare.com/coverage.cfm
Any comment is appreciated. Thanks!

Extended warranties on average make more money for Acura than save money for the owners. I had an extended warranty on my 97 Honda Accord up to 100,000 miles and never used it. It wasn't until +120,000 miles I had minor issues that would have been covered by a warranty if it did not expire (leaking main seal, power steering leak, radiator fan died twice, and a crack in radiator). All those repairs cost less than the cost of the extended warranty. I gave the car to my niece and she is still driving it with +220,000 miles and everything still works.
The RDX does have a lot of extra electronics and a drivetrain 10-times more sophisticated compared to a 97 Accord 2.2L 4AT. I would only consider a warranty as a "peace of mind" purchase like life insurance. You don't need it; but, if you feel better by having it, go for it.

Usually not worth the money. It is a honda afterall. However, we bought one with the RDX and I will be using it in a couple weeks for a blown speaker ($100). So if the back-up camera goes too, it might just pay for itself. Also certain items like the HiD are NOT covered. Be sure to read the fine print.

Just calculate the interest of 900 dollars over the life of your loan. Skipping it and you'll be $900 plus interest richer in the end.
Even better if you could put into an account that accrues interest and pays you back and possibly end up with more money in the end.

Warranty warriors? Thoughts?

As some of the posters have already said, buy the extended service contract for peace of mind and the fact that our cars have more electronics to go wrong. For me, it also depends if the extended service contract is a factory product...I stay away from third party contracts because it involves too many steps such as having someone from the company look at the car before paying off. If you have the tech package, this may be another reason to buy the contract. Google extended service contracts and you'll find tons of pros and cons.

it's exactly like mrgold35 said... the warranty is designed to make money for the provider, he's playing the odds, and these are good odds because it's an acura.
for us buyers, we know it'll most likely not be needed, we've heard enough about acura, that's why we bought it in the first place... but it still gives us peace of mind, in case anything goes wrong we won't have to break our backs paying for it.
i bought a certified 2007 rdx which had 3 years of powertrain warranty remaining, and 1 year of bumper-to-bumper because of the certification. i figured that the electronics on this are expensive enough that if something does go wrong, it'll be quite a strain for me. so i got an extended 4yr bumper-to-bumper for $2400, which gives me just one year above the existing one. i got it added to the autoloan so that it's paid over the life of the car. i can't be sure if i did the right thing, but i've some peace of mind!

Did you go with the AcuraCare or a third-party? I am looking into getting coverage for my RDX. I have an 07 with 26k miles and hardly drive the RDX but maybe 5-7k a year at the moment.
Were you able to get anything cheaper?

Lol... thanks! Well.. I wished it were Christmas right now living in Texas with no RDX A/C... I'll look into the plans again. Appears Saccucci is coming out on top with their price and it may be peace of mind to tackle my A/C issue and potential turbo/engine issues in the future...

I just bought a Certified 08 RDX w/tech at 36,000 miles and I admit I did bump it up (paid $1200 to up the non-powertrain portion to 7/100 after debating the pros and cons for a couple of weeks.) Keeping in mind that buying CPO gives you another 1/12k of bumper to bumper on top of the original 4/50 I bascially will pay $50/mo for that warranty coverage (I'd be shocked if I hit 100k before 7 years.) I (usually) never buy extended warranties for any of my vehicles but with the tech package I just wanted to have the peace of mind.

I bought the extended warranty with my '09 RDX. I need to go back and look at the contract, but I think I paid something like $1600 for 5yr/100k.
Incidentally, I was at the dealership a few weeks ago for my A1 service and some guy in a TL had a problem and was asking about his extended warranty. It sounds like he bought a 3rd party extended warranty (which the dealership sells) and the service guy said he had to ask that company whether they'd cover it. It sounds like complete BS to me -- the dealership sells something to their customers (probably collect a big commission) and then wash their hands of responsibility.
I think I have AcuraCare through Acura. If I don't then I'm going to demand for a refund as that extended "warranty" probably isn't worth anything. I figure they get a bigger cut for selling non-Acura products. If I recall correctly, I can ask for a refund and it sounds like I paid way too much.
