Why wait for the 3rd gen RDX...

...to have modern turbo-charged power?

But there’s the rub. For now it seems the Type R engine is only available in support of grassroots and professional racers who are members of that program. They’re not just selling it to everyone

I know, I posted as more of a joke than anything. It would be fun to see something like this make its way into the next gen though.

I thought the 2.0T is pretty confirmed for the RDX, the one that is in the Accord now, which is a detuned CTR motor?

I would be a shame for Honda to keep the Type-R engine for itself and not share with Acura. I don't see it being used in a Type R RDX; but, it could work for a next gen Type R ILX or TLX? It would be a beautiful beast to have sh-sh-awd TLX Type R with 2.0T 306jhp/295tq and 3 electric motors. I think the best we will get is the Accord 2.0T 252hp/273tq engine with the new 10AT. Reading a Car and Driver article on the differences between the Type R and Accord 2.0T are very little. Other than ECU programming, it is mostly larger high flow injectors and a larger turbo for the Type R (the smaller Accord turbo spools faster for less lag and more tq at a lower rpm). The article didn't say anything about I/H/E differences between the two: https://blog.caranddriver.com/a-tale...-civic-type-r/

We have to see what the Type-R tuner folks will do with the new engine to see the hp/tq potential for the 3rd Gen RDX. We might get the hp/tq close to Type-R numbers with a reflash+injectors+larger intercooler? It will be all for nothing if the 3rd Gen RDX still has the modified CR-V awd system and the softly tuned chassis.

Sadly more than just a de-tune, but it is based on the same design. Some significant hardware changes as well from what I've read, but it would still make for a solid engine in a new RDX. Assuming it's utilized, they might even juice it up a bit, maybe to keep the same overall power output as the current gen. All kinds of possible scenarios out there.

The 2.0T would be a great base engine for the Acura line up, but as mrgold35 mentioned, I would like to see the 2.0T coupled with the Sport Hybrid system for the top end performance models.

You just have to be a member of a sactioned body to register with HPD. SCCA is a sanctioned body as far as I'm aware. This should be available to Auto-X'ers theoretically.

+1000!

Either as sh-awd or the Pilot/Ridgeline awd minus "sh" programming. Acura can then introduce the "sh" programming for tech and/or Adv versions of the RDX. NO MORE CR-V AWD SYSTEM! It seems like a no brainier for the RDX if they can put the same awd system (without the "sh" programming) in the Pilot and Ridgeline. Honda always seems to act like it is competing against Acura for sales and doesn't like to share until years later; but, willing to take from Acura at anytime. I'm starting to feel like Acura is an upgraded trim level to Honda in the last few years compared to being a (near) luxury/performance upgraded brand of Honda. Even car magazines stop including Acura (sometimes Infiiti also) in comparison test with other big named luxury sedans and SUVs in the last few years.

Acura just doesn't seem to get the whole performance thing anymore. Look at Lexus and how many different models they have out, some of them VERY performance oriented.
Meanwhile Acura throws some spoilers & body pieces on a TLX and calls it the sports model even though it has the same powertrain as the regular models.
They need to get the Honda 2.0 turbo in the lineup and also make a twin turbo V-6 TLX - step up the damn performance level. Make a few bad-ass vehicles.

Acura just seems happy to put out a few kind of bland models with no optional powertrain upgrades that appeal to soccer moms and non-performance oriented drivers.
Agreed that now days there is not much difference between a upscale Honda model and the similar Acura vehicle. I'd get the Honda and save the $$$.

We might go to the MDX or another brand when it is time to replace our Rav4 and keep our 2012RDX as a second vehicle.

They have totally removed any & all aggressive looks & performance oriented styling from the new MDXs. They look real clean, but bland. There are no exhaust cutouts in the rear either.

At the same time, I could probably see myself romping around in an MDX hybrid in a few years.

in the spy shots; looks like the RDX gained weight.
possibly all acura did was MOVE the RDX name plate to the MDX.

which then, we'll see a slot open up for a smaller CUV

That's what I'm actually hoping for. Increase the length to 190" and give it A-Spec bits. I miss my X3 and the hatch, and if Acura will make a performance variant for the 3G, I may move to the RDX when my TLX lease is done. If it doesn't pan out, then I'm going to the A4 Allroad.

What would then become of the MDX-move it up from mid-size to full size? I guess that makes sense because they don't have a full size SUV

MDX = Full size, RDX = Mid size, CDX = Compact. Acura is about the only semi-lux/lux manufacturer that doesn't have something that slots in the bottom.

I believe/thought the current MDXs are considered mid-size & the current RDXs are considered to be compact?

The current MDX and RDX is kinda in between no mans land in terms of size. The RDX is in between compact & mid, and the MDX is in between mid & full.
