Weak Battery in Cold - Anyone Else?

Since day 1, the RDX has acted pretty weak when starting in the cold, even when in my garage (which is typically around freezing on cold days outside).

I left my car overnight at my families house and it was cold out -10C or 10-20F, but nothing ground breaking and it really struggled to turn over. Other cars I've had don't struggle at this temp.

Anyone replace the battery and notice better starting performance?

nice to see u posting again CWE....

im also going thru this right now around 54k miles. Start ups - every electronic device and light build turning on and off each time the starter is triggering. VER VERY WEAK. at some points last winter, it took a few key-turns to get it to turn over, but it has never crapped out on me. Batt still reports good power on testing, but it seems real weak. may just throw in a new one.

I replaced my battery last summer after the OEM battery failed completely with zero power in the middle of the day. I now have a Interstate MegaTron Plus with 640 CCA. I was in Colorado for a weekend vacation and it was about 10 degree in the morning. Even with the new battery, I had the following problems:

-the RDX was slow to start
-Navi screen was extremely dark until the interior warmed up
-TPMS gave me a low pressure warning of 26 PSI in all tires
-I got a P0556 error of "Brake Booster Pressure Sensor" may not be working and the brake may be hard to press.

Once the temp got above 25 degrees in the sun, every problem when away. I think the RDX is made for snow but not the extreme cold.

i did replaced my battery and i thought i solved the problem.... i post this in other thread today so i'll just paste it here

"I also have the same problem last night, My brother's Infiniti EX and my RDX parked inside our garage for 2 weeks and last night when i start my car it doesnt start at all although my radio and light is still working. FYI i also have new battery bought it 2 mos ago (Red Top Optima) My brother's Infiniti start without a problem even his battery is 2 yrs old. If i go to the dealer they will tell you that it's normal because the car was sitting in my garage for 2 weeks but it didnt happend to my brother's car..... something is draining the baterry even the car is off and the alarm is off also...."

I also got the P0556 code the other day - I notice the car's engine bay is a lot louder / noisier these few weeks since the weather drop to the low teens.

It didn't happen last year - hopefully it is just the weather and nothing else.!

Do you have AAA? Once in a while I have them come out and do a detailed charging system/battery test on my wife and I's cars.

A lot of people overlook the fact that voltage can be normal but if your CCAs are low it's hit or miss whether it starts with even worse odds in cold temperatures.

Advance Auto and similar testing machines in my local area DO NOT reveal CCAs which is where AAA comes into play. They are even able to show you the amount of drain on your battery when sitting which is helpful.

That being said my OEM battery is labeled April 2009 and tested perfectly healthy 2 weeks ago, my wife's died and AAA was here so I figured why not test mine as well. lol

I had one replaced last winter when it failed to start the car, and the new one is very slow to crank these days as well. I hope they upgraded the battery in the 2013 models as 440 CCA is just not cutting it for this car.

Like XIS said, I'll get free replacements as long as the warranty lasts.

I currently have red top optima and it's better compare to oem but if you will not use you car for more than 5 days your optima wont start your car.... new battery or higher CCA will not make a big difference in our RDX coz something is draining our battery, it will not last for more than 5 days...

My brother's inifiti was sitting in our garage also for 2 weeks and he can start his car without hesitation.....Red stop battery might be good if you drive you car daily.

Same here. Car @ 80000 kms. Last Christmas, after a late night party at our friend's place, temp ~ -5C, for 6 hours, the RDX refuse to start. Had to jump start. Replaced with new battery from costco, okay, but still kind of not quite the same. Like someone said here, something is draining the battery while in park.

there is a TSB for the 2007 about the amp draining the battery when off. I know because my initial battery replacement was due to that TSB.

XIS - Can that TSB be applied to the '08 do you think or did they "fix" the problem in the '08? I'm having the same problem when it's cold. It has never not started but there are times where I've started to lose faith in the confidence of it starting.

Honestly, not sure. I 'thought' it was for the 2007's only, but a quick call to the dealer should get you the correct answer.
The TSB was for batteries in the tech model that drained due to the amp not shutting off in certain situations.

Good Luck!

Thanks XIS. I'm taking my car in tomorrow to get the center console replaced (due to the leather bubbling issue). I'll ask them when I go in.

I took my preludes brand new battery put it in the rdx and put the RDX's battery in to the prelude when I sold the prelude. I can tell you that starting the prelude with the rdx's battery in it was very different!

Replace OEM battery, it is horrible. The RDX has a new 640CCA Engergizer battery, it's still pretty slow to start in the cold but it does start in one shot even with all the accessories on.
