Transfer Case = Front Differential???

Dumb question but i keep reading references to the front differential and in other cases the transfer case.

Are they one and the same? In other words for the drive train you would have the transmission + front differential (transfer case) + rear differential?

Thanks.

Acura’s SH-AWD has a transfer case which feeds the impeller shaft. It holds a whopping 1/2 qt of gear oil .

On the SH-AWD there's a transfer case and not a front differential?

Thanks.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the RDX has a transaxle up front (transmission/differential in one package), and the transfer case handles the power delivery to the rear differential.

The automatic transmission (contains 5spd auto+transfer case) which is connected to transfer case and transfer case transfers power to rear diff by drive shaft/propeller shaft. Honda calls main 5 speed transmission a front differential+transfer case, but transfer case is a separate unit which takes gear oil. Technically there is 5speed transmission+transfer case+rear diff. Whole system and it's components (axles etc.) is called as transaxle by honda.
