Regular gas

Regular gas
I am currently in line to get gas , not sure if they have premium. I have half a tank of premium as always but if need be can I fill up with regular? In Long Island panic here of gas shortages. Thanks Sandy!

if you put regular gas doesnt matter it still screws up with everything under the hood. i know cause I know someone who put regular gas in a bmw and it didnt run the same a lot of work need to be done just to fix that problems from the gas.

regular gas in the RDX is a giant no no. although the engine runs so damn rich that i doubt it will cause any significant damage, it will still have a negative impract on fuel economy, performance and engine life.

This is probably much too late to help, but it may set your mind at ease, if you read this sometime later on.
My 2009 OM (owner manual) says that short term, temporary use of 87 octane is OK, if there is no 91 octane available. Long term use will damage the engine. Note the unstated implication that less than 87 octain will definitely damage the engine - how soon that would happen will depend upon turbo boost level, and for how long.
In particular, if you can manage to drive without engaging high boost of the turbo, there is less chance of engine damage. When the turbo spools up, the pressure inside the engine increases, which requires a higher octane gas. That is a simplistic explanation.
Being able to drive with minimal engagement of the turbo is somewhat of a skill, that is worth developing, for the next time.
I hope that you are safe, and managed to get to someplace safe during this emergency.

I had to use regular. And I was able to get octane boost bottle at station. I will try my best not to boost turbo .It's been crazy over here especially with no power . Lucky I have a wood burning stove to keep my family warm and a gas water heater.
Thanks for the input guys.

At least you have gas - NYC does not have any available.
Also if there is - +50 cars and walk in is waiting for it to power their cars and generators.
Look what AAA stated a while back -
GAS: USE AN OCTANE BOOSTER
If you're buying premium gas, and your car will take regular, you're wasting money. In fact, AAA says that, nowadays, only five percent of cars require premium. But if you feel strongly about having a high-octane fuel, consider switching to regular and adding an octane booster. One bottle costs between $5-$7. Here's what you do: Let your tank get near empty, and put in about one-third or half the bottle of octane booster (depending on how big your tank is). Then, fill it up with the cheapest regular gas you can find. Thanks to the octane booster -- you'll get a 104 - 108 octane rating. That's more than you can buy at any pump. Since regular and premium differ by about 30 cents per gallon, if you have a 15 gallon tank -- you'll save $4.50 per tank full, more than making up for the cost of the Octane Booster. (source: AAA)

I drove rdx with half regular in it with octane boost no issues. Did my best not to have turbo boost kick in.
Gas here in LI is scarce, I waited 2.5 hours at around 10 pm for gas. Going to need to venture out again in next day or so for generator gas.
I have yet to see a LIPA truck come by to take the trees off the wires that are all over the place on my block. most of the downed wires are at the back of the homes here. They are saying on the news about another 7 days for power. Well see.
When you see the news how people lost everything I am very thankful for only minor damage to my home and property.

^Best of luck wifesRDXtech. Stay safe, and glad you made it ok. From the news I've heard, some people have not been so lucky, which is unfortunate.

if it was me i would just avoid storm gas. there might be water in that gas, you never know. i would wait another couple days to make sure all the bad gas is gone.

I just got power back to my home after 11 days. There are still long lines for gas but seem much better with the odd/even rule that went into effect today in Long Island. Rationing gas Great!
Tomorrow I will be allowed to gas up my wifes ( she has even plate #) car but again there is no premium gas anywhere here. I have half a tank of the mixed gas with octane boost as discussed previously in this post.
So my question when I go to fill up do you think I should put the whole container of octane boost in? Or just use half of it? I hope and pray they have premium but seems like it is not the case.
I have been in many long gas lines ( 2 to 3 hour waits) over the last week and half to keep my generator going. I used this website to help me find gas:

I know exactly how you feel, i live in LI too. been driving around hunting for gas. forget premium, I'm lucky to get regular..but i just don't wanna damage my engine and pay the price in the future....

I'm pretty sure putting 87 in the RDX will just cause the ECU to retard timing and preventing it from having knock. Although I wouldn't recommend boosting with regular in. Correct me if i'm wrong.
