rear windshield wiper

Why do some commercial car washes put a plastic bag around the wiper before going thru the wash? Is it necessary and should be done all the time?

I always thought it was so that the brushes wouldn't "grab" the wiper and damage it, but not sure on that. Not all car washes do it, but the one I go to nowadays does. I'd ask the car wash people, but none of them speak english.

Yes, the better car washes will use a baggy or mild tape to keep the brushes from ripping the rear wiper off. My Integra power antenna died in the up position (fortunately) a while back, and the guy at the wash walked along with the car and held the big rag things away from the antenna. That was interesting.

Unhappy Car Wash/Wiper

When I finished at the carwash the other day, my rear wiper was in the up position, and sticking out from the glass. Worried now that the whole thing could be yanked off at some time.

The car wash I use just tapes it down with masking tape. As other stated, so the brushes, etc do not rip the wiper off... Just a precaution for them.

I don't let my parents take our Acura's to the car wash :-P

Problem solved.
