This is a big issue living in Canada, picture this, a black winter coat, or wearing a suit to work, get to your destination and open the trunk. reach in to get your stuff and dirty, salty crud water drips down on your clothes and temporarily stains them. Has anyone found a resolution to this (its a 2012). I'd greatly appreciate it. I don't like looking like I've been attacked by pigeons or gulls.

 

i mean, it's physics. any liquid on the hatch when raised will fall down.
maybe have an umbrella handy, and open it and get under it before you open the hatch

 

Pretty much no way you can't get your hands or clothing dirty trying to open the RDX rear hatch with winter muck all over the rear. I sometimes put items in the hatch behind the driver's side rear seat. I just have to fold the seat down to reach them. It help to have a cargo net to keep items in place in the hatch using this method.

 

it's a bad design. Mrgold, wish I could do that but I have booster seats back there. So school bags, work bags groceries all have to go back there. Unlike the useless comment above yours, thanks for the suggestion. There should be a way to divert the water to the sides or not allow any water under there in the first place. Maybe some thin weather strip...

I haven't experienced any snow or ice with the RDX yet, but have not noticed much of a problem with rain water,
Can't you just reach in with one hand & open the hatch while stepping back until all the stuff falls?

 

I don't recall this issue during the summer with the rain, to be honest.

 

When we have a lot of rain (no snow where I live) I'll open the hatch and step back while it opens. Then wait several seconds for majority of the water to come gushing down before I step underneath it to get my stuff.

Bring a cordless leaf blower with you, prior to opening hatch, blow the hatch dry of water and then open hatch.

 

I'm praying for some snow & ice so I can experience this problem. Since we have had the SH-AWD MDX & RDX, it has not snowed or iced here at all.
I can't wait to test out the SH-AWDs in some real shit.

 

From day 1, whenever the car is washed n dried, you open the hatch and residual water falls out/down on the left tail light. Haven't bothered to check where it gets caught up,
Just accepted it and dried off the water. Going on 10yrs now

 

I'm lucky in New Mexico because we are getting close to 100 days without any rain or snow in town. Pretty much means the whole state will probably be on fire next spring and summer; but, at least I don't have to worry about getting wet when I open the rear RDX hatch.

 

Are there other SUVs where water doesn't run drip down upon opening the hatch?

 

Anyone which has a left or right door opening. I don't recall any of my other hatch cars or suvs dripping so much.

 

Those are pretty rare. I know the 1sty gen CR-V had that and maybe some Land Rovers. Can't recall any modern SUVs with side opening hatch. The other issue with side opening is that sometimes it doesn't open in the direction that's needed.

water will spill over the edges when the hatch is open.
It's something you deal with by learning not to get in the way, or by coming up with your own trick.. whether that be by inventing something to prevent spillage or by modifying your behavior.
