RDX vs RL
RDX vs RL
Just walked out of the parts dept with ATF-Z1 for my B-16, and came across an 08 RL and RDX side by side in the showroom
The revised 08 EPA numbers are: RL: 16 and 24, RDX: 17 and 22
Both vehicles weigh about 4000 lbs. (RL: 4018, RDX: 3950), and both have similar SH-AWD.
Horsepower -- RL: 290, RDX: 240. Torque -- RL: 256, RDX: 260
It's interesting that the RL V-6 puts out 30 more HP than the RDX turbo-4 and does 2 mpg better in highway economy.
It may be related to fifth gear ratio as the RL is 0.48 and the RDX is taller at 0.61.
That might be to accomodate the RDX tow rating of 1500 lbs. I don't know if the RL is rated to tow anything.
At any rate I'm getting 18 and 27 with average improving to 20.4 now.

The RDX runs a little rich for protection. Hondatas reflash is supposed to bring down to ~6.8sec w/o brake torque.

Look at care and detail that goes into the RL aerodynamics, including blending of the windshield, the side windows, door frames, etc.. They even have hidden wiper arm pivots to minimize drag. The underbody has a lot of aerodynamic detailing as well (Search TOV Exhaust Notes) that the RDX does not have. The Cd is 0.29, which is pretty good for a sedan, even if does weigh a hefty 4000 lbs.
The RL is certainly the most quiet Acura I have driven at speed, and it is among the quietest of any car I have driven at speed, with regard to wind noise and turbulence, especially off the A-pillar and mirrors.
So as has been said, I think drag plus the taller 5th gear would account for it.
