RDX Top Speed?
RDX Top Speed?
I've noticed that with my typical driving habits, I'm only 1/3 of the way on the speedometer scale cruising at 60mph.
Does anyone know what the top speed of the RDX is? What's rated?
I don't think I would ever get the balls to try it, but what's the fastest that anyone has gone in their RDX? Is there that much potential in the engine?

This exact question has been discussed at length before. Be prepared for all the "you shouldn't drive that fast it kills people" comments like before. We all know that, what we can never seem to get is an actual top speed number. It would just be interesting to know.

I hit 85 mph to pass a car on the freeway one time (and slowed down immediately once I was ahead of the car), and felt the engine could give some more with no sweat. Very smooth powerplant indeed...
IMHO, the biggest fun with this engine, is not the high end speed... it's the gobbles of low end torque... It gives you the confidence to pass any car (who is not racing with you) whenever you feel that it was necessary...
Top speed means nothing in the real world of driving... it's all a market ploy to draw in buyers, who think that a car with large HP numbers and high top speed numbers, means it's a "powerful car"... Yeah... sure a 600HP engine sure sounds like it's a lot, but if your torque is kind of small at low end engine speeds, (like in a F1 engine), it is pretty much useless in everyday driving. Are you going to rev to 18,000 rpm everyday in regular driving... don't think so...
Ever seen a CIVIC SiR on the road... when it starts to pick up speed from standing stop, it snarls loudly, but not going anywhere really... only until it hits around 6500 rpm where the VTEC kicks in, then it begins to shoot off, but the traffic typically don't allow for such high rpm lift off...
Whereas, a VW Golf TDI, with much similar HP number, but much larger torque, scoots way ahead of the SiR and passes it easily in city driving...
We are all not driving on F1 racing circuits, but rather typical hwys and roads... High HP numbers is really simply a "show-off" number to boast about...
I always shake my head at those Honda suped up Civics, making lots of noise in their VTEC engines, and I pass them easily, while they are struggling to rev their engine to "lift-off" speed... lots of noise, but not going anywhere quick...really...
Torque, passing capability... is the strength of the RDX turbo, not the high HP number
Here is a site that is posting the governed 130mph. This isn't an acura site but they appear to have posted the same type of story that everyone else did when the RDX came out.

lol, I drove from San Antonio to El Paso a month or so ago, and 85 is what I set my cruise control to! (Speed limit is 80 if you are wondering).
Finding out what your max kph/mph is in your RDX is a really bad idea. Please don't try this at home. Parasitic drag on the RDX would probably keep you under 120mph. My top speed was 130mph in my Porsche. I will never do that again. It is just too dangerous. (And it scared the shit out of me).
Marco, I was intentionally doing about 160mph on a 750 bike for 2 hours(Audi wagons passed me^ at 180! That is until I hit traffic outside of Darmstadt went from 160 to stau @ 50kph -130 mph. felt like I could run faster than the bike!
Anyway most Honda engines are governed with a fuel cut so at some point we should have asked where is the fuel cut

nope the redline is not the problem, its the parasitic drag that limits its top speed. The car can hit +180mph on 5th gear and near 150 on 4th gear, thats how freaking wide the gears ratios are. but ofc air drag wont allow this and hence the car will stop accelerating at 140. think about it, the rdx has a front area of nearly 30 sq ft compared to TSX' 22 sq ft. also the first gen tsx is the most aerodynamic car acura ever made with exception of the NSX.

I understand parasitic drag, but 180 mph?
You think this 240 hp drivetrain could hit Ferrari or Porsche speeds with better aerodynamics?
That is faster than my 345 hp, very low drag, C5 Corvette.

every car's top speed is limited by its aerodynamics. if you put this engine in a NSX it could probably hit 180mph. but in the rdx can't do more than 140mph max. the rdx is just too big.
A couple weeks ago coming back on I90 leaving from Minneapolis I had my brother in the car with me, we tried to see if the vehicle had a governor on it and tested the max speed. I hit about 135 mph and slowed down. It felt like it wanted to keep going but I slowed down due to traffic I was approaching. Someday I'll try and max it out but it might be a while.
OK, so we started with:
The RDX...
and revised this statement to say: well on second thought, toss out the entire RDX body, chassis and drivetrain -- place only the K23A1 engine in a world class sports car and pro-bab-ly:
By the way, the 2005 Acura NSX had a 290 hp V6 that wound out to 8000 rpm. It's top speed is reported as 175 mph.
So 180 mph from a 240 hp I4 with a 6800 redline is darn impressive. No wonder the NSX guys are all shopping for K23A1s

the k23 has more torque and roughly same horsepower (220whp or ~270bhp) with the hondata reflash as the C32B. not to mention the k23 is a longstroke forced induction which generates more power at lower rpms. Also the K23 cannot be fitted on to an NSX because of transmission mating incompatibilities and as well as NSX' RWD platform...totally incompatible. hell you won't be able to mount the k23 on a civic even. this low end torque helps a lot in high speeds where you are trying to breach the drag barrier at 4500 rpm when you fall into 5th gear of death. at that gear the K23 produces more power than the C32. although im not sure what kind of gearing NSX has, and the C32 is designed to operate at high rpms more reliably than k23.
if honda places the K23 in lets say small-mid size sedan like a civic SI with a 6 speed, it would be honda's fastest car.

I have to admit I have the answer to your questions on the top speed of our rdx's.
While my wife and I were driving our new, to us, 08 rdx home from the dealership in Dallas I was determined to find out it's top speed. First let me state that I had more time for this than you may think as the drive home was 2250 miles, yes miles from dealership to driveway. It was on the highway north of Moab, Utah that I finally summoned up the courage to give it a go. The top speed of the rdx is governed at 140 mph, as that was the reading when the engine cut out. The rev's were below 5000 and the car was floating along nicely. My wife was holding our portable tom tom gps,(just in case we had any issues with the acura nav. system, we didn't.) it read 222 kilometers an hour or 139mph. PS.(this was early morning on empty freeway.)

what? mine is governed at exactly 209km/h or 130mph. US versions are dif I guess? as I said before the gear ratios are so wide I figure u could do 180 on fifth gear. at 100mph the car feels pretty 'heavy' and if I take my foot off the gas car decelerates very quickly. the so called 4th gear of death is totally true as soon as I hit car just bogs down, not as lively as in 3rd gear.
ps i hope to almighty god hondas new 6AT gear of death is moved up to 5 or 6

The rdx is limited to 136mph according to acura. That must be the speed I was going when the engine cut, my apologies for my stated 139-140 claim. Asked my wife about the 222km/h gps reading, she laughed at me, said she never said that. Like me she said she was watching the road when the engine cut. Said she was just agreeing with me when I said I thought it cut around 220 on the speedometer. Oops guess I should have talked to her before I opened my mouth, as usual. Again my apologies.
