RDX or MDX

Hello Everyone,

Please give me some advices of the pros and cons between RDX and MDX and which one is better as with looks, performance, and maintenance.

I and my wife planning on buying an SUV, after narrowed down all the options. We decided that an Acura SUV is what we wanted, but since we don't know much about Acura wihout drive one, I'm here to ask you guys please give your opinion between the MDX and RDX.

I did some reading and it says that the RDX suck on millage, and with the MDX there is a "thud" or "clicking" sound at 10-20 miles in cold weather that most people have said Acura dealer can't fix it and there also wind noise on highway speed on driver side. Some said the "thud" sound coming from VSA modulator, others say suspension lower control arms...who knows what.

So...given the prices, maintenance, performances, and problems. Which is one is better, appreciates all your comments. Thank you.

Both great vehicles but what's your priority?

Sportiness and handling (RDX)

Greater cargo and passenger capacity (MDX)

We have both an 07 RDX Tech, mine and an 07 MDX Tech/Ent, the wife's.

For driving pleasure, the RDX feels more nimble, quicker acceleration and braking. I do not like to drive the MDX as if feels like it is overweight. Love my RDX.

However, on trips, I like the MDX better (wife always drives). Better ride, more space inside, power passenger seat.

On gas consumption, I am running around 20mpg with 13K total miles on the RDX, 80% highway. The MDX is about 16mpg with 80% city driving. On long highway trips, the MDX will run around 20mpg.

Even if money is not a factor and you do not need the 7 passenger capacity of the MDX, then the RDX is the way to go.

Bottom line is that the MDX is a bigger, heavier vehicle that is less fun to drive, harder to park, and gets worse gas mileage. If you really need the interior space, then the MDX is the best in its class. If you can make do with a smaller SUV, then the RDX makes more sense.

we actually have both at our house as well (both techs).

the rdx is better as a daily driver as it is quicker in and out of traffic, but i agree with bobq that the mdx is better for those long drives.

the mdx is much more luxurious in every aspect though!

but it really depends what you need it for as they are different.

I'm talking with a dealer this weekend about possibly switching from the RDX to the MDX. For me, sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic 2-3 hours a day, no real chance to take advantage of the sporty nature of the RDX, I'm thinking comfort, luxury and ride at this point. We'll see...

Seems to me that a smaller, more fuel efficient, more maneuverable, easier to park car would be better for commuting. That probably depends on your roads and route.

As others mentioned, it depends on your needs. Assuming cost is not an issue (otherwise you wouldn't be considering the higher priced MDX), I would ask you whether or not you need cargo space and a 3rd row of seats.

My wife drives our '06 MDX and we often take family members to outings and the 3rd row of seats is very useful (especially considering we're planning to have kids). We can carry 7 people in one car where it normally would have taken 2 cars. That was huge for us. To balance out our MDX, I drive a '08 TSX every day to work, which is our runabout car for errands and driving fun.

That being said, I've driven the RDX and was attracted to its speed and tossibility for a SUV. If I were a single guy and had one vehicle to rely on, I'd probably go with the RDX.

So if you plan on carrying people and larger cargo, the MDX is probably the better choice. If cargo/people is not a priority and you're looking for a SUV that's more like a car, the RDX is the better choice.

We debated the third row and decided that it is easier and more comfortable to just take two cars, especially since for us it would be a two or three times a year occurrence. Third row is useless if you have kids in car seats unless you want to screw with moving car seats around. We will probably not get a third row vehicle until our kids are in grade school.
