Performance chip.

I was browsing around on eBay just now (terrible habit I have) and ran across this little piece of equipment.

Considering I have zippy experience working on cars (other than filling the washer fluid...sweet) but want to sweeten up my RDX, I have concerns:

1) Screwing up my car
2) The claims for performance improvement are only that: CLAIMS.

Thoughts? Advice? Let's get this internets thing moving!!!

While I can't speak for the reputation of the particular product in question - the "buying guide" that Sasair references warns about performance products which richen the mixture but the product in question advertises that it leans the mixture...?

Wow! More horsepower on less fuel!

35 more horsepower and 5 more mpg for 7 dollars and 29 cents. What a deal: that's 20.8 cents per horsepower.

How the heck did Honda's billion dollar Research and Development Department fail to discover stoichiometric (theoretical) combustion?????

Those Honda people don't know that the inverse relationship between fuel/air mixture and cylinder head temperature is only theoretical.

Stoichiometric-holistic combustion. Chip the mini-van and do wheelies backwards! (Add a Tornado and laugh at those snooty Prius drivers.)

A stoichiometric mixture unfortunately burns very hot and can damage engine components if the engine is placed under high load at this fuel air mixture. Due to the high temperatures at this mixture, detonation of the fuel air mix shortly after maximum cylinder pressure is possible under high load (referred to as knocking or pinging). Detonation can cause serious engine damage as the uncontrolled burning of the fuel air mix can create very high pressures in the cylinder. As a consequence stoichiometric mixtures are only used under light load conditions. For acceleration and high load conditions, a richer mixture (lower air-fuel ratio) is used to produce cooler combustion products and thereby prevent detonation and overheating of the cylinder head.

Just stay far....far away from that crap! You can do (and most likely will) do plenty of damage to the car.

Remember the old saying "If it sounds too good to be true, it's probably is"

Your best bet is a cold air intake.

Very few "performance chips" left. Most engine management reprogramming is now accomplished via re-flashing the stock ECU (for mild tunes, especially on cars with stock forced induction) or via stand alone aftermarket ECU's (for more extreme modifications like crate motors or when adding forced induction to a car that does not have it stock).

The best is a custom tune from a reputable tuner.
