Newbie with a poll. Question on turbo whine.

Hello All.

I recently tested the 2007 RDX and liked just about everything. I was wondering - does the turbo whine get to be a bit annoying? I don't always drive with the music on (best way to concentrate on driving AND listen to my wife!).

I would like some opinions please.

Thank you!
Jay

The sound of a turbo spooling is one of a kind.

It is more pronounced in the RDX compared to some other turbos I have driven. Instead of a "whine" it is more of a "whoosh" like one of the hoses has come off. I thought something was wrong with the first one I drove, but now I do love that sound!!

For me I actually think its way too subdued. I only hear it when I take off from a dead stop and even then only for a second or two. I waiting for a BOV !!!

Jay - Thanks for posting this poll. I'm in the same predicament as you and can't wait to see what kind of responses you get.

Wink quiiiiiiiiiiiiisssssssssssiiuuuuu.....

The turbo spooling is very quite in the RDX. I feel Acura did this because it is a luxury car and they need to be quiet. If the turbo was any louder it would proabaly turn off a lot of buyers. IMHO i think its way to muffled. I want to hear that bad boy wail! I guess thats what aftermarket BOV's and other mods are for (for those of us that enjoy the quiisssiuuuuuu!!) right?

My daily driver is a Camaro Z28 1994. When I started working with Acuras, the only car that got my pulse racing like the Camaro does was the RDX. Every other car was too "mild" for me.

I eventually picked the TL-S as my favorite Acura, but I have to admit that the whoosh from the RDX's turbo is something else. It's a great sound and a great feeling...

I never had anyone complain about the noise. 50% don't notice it, 50% kinda enjoy it.

Aye, I also enjoy the sound of it, what little there is. I don't know why people would have a problem with it, really. I'm not criticizing those that do (mostly it just puzzles me), but having a problem with the turbo spool in a vehicle that's meant to be aggressive seems counterintuitive to me.

it doesn't seem that bad to me, but on the demo I test drove it was annoying much louder than on my RDX.

Maybe another one of those things Acura tweaked mid-production. Mine it really quiet and I'd like to hear more of it.

My 08 seems to be quieter than the 07 demo I drove 5-6 months ago.

Of course, I'm one to enjoy the sounds of vehicles...I always enjoyed the turbo spooling on my Saab 9-3 SE Vert...I enjoy the sound of the rear engine 996 as I'm banging thru the gears...hell, I even enjoy hearing my neighbor fire up his Ford Thunderbird with his Borla exhaust.

So here's a kind of noobie turbo question as I've never really driven with a turbo before and the brief drive I had in the '07 RDX didn't really help me hear/feel it.

How often does the turbo "engage"? Will it engage when I'm going 30 mph down a regular rode or only when I'm accerlerating on a highway or onto a highway? I'm just curious about how often you hear the "swoosh" sound that it makes?

It looks like I'll be buying an '08 now. By the time I get my bonus I think all dealers will be out of the '07s. Oh well...I still can't wait.

The RDX's turbo is what you call a "variable turbo". It means it takes a lot less time to spool since it's able to start spinning at low RPMs. That's important because turbos traditionally show bad Turbo Lag - you step on the gas and it takes 2.5 seconds for it to get going.

In the RDX, any pressure on the accelerator starts the spooling and soon enough (maybe .5 seconds) the turbo is active. So it's very hard to keep it "off" - maybe the only way to do it is to keep the car in S and upshift manually, way before 2,500 RPM.

Levy - Thanks for the feedback. So the turbo is really "always going" no matter what your speed. So it's safe to say that the "swoosh" sound from the turbo is pretty constant but it looks as though from reading people's comments on here that it's less noticeable than most turbo cars, especially the '08 which is what I'll be getting.

Answering my own poll.....

I just test drove the 08 for about 12 miles, highway and back roads. I can honestly say the 08 turbo was a lot quieter and I thought the ride was less stiff too.

Now......Do I trade my truck in on it or wait till the 09 TSX comes out to see how it looks?

No polls for this question - I just have to do a little soul searchin'.

Thanks for participating in the poll!

you hear it when you accelerate - not for the first tiniest bit as the RPMs get up high enough, but then you hear it spool until you take your foot off the gas - if you use the turbo boost indicator to see when turbo kicks in (though really you can just feel it), you should get used to the timing of hearing the sound.

Very sad.

I like both the turbo whine and stiff "sport handling" ride on my 07. Looks like Acura is watering down the RDX for the whips out there who want soft and comfortable luxury car feel, very sad. I'm happy I got the real raw product.

the turbo is ALWAYS spinning. the sound you hear actually isnt even the sound of the turbo spinning faster. the sound you hear is excess pressure being dumped back into the exhaust to limit boost pressure going into the engine. the actual sound of the turbo spinning is so muted, you really have to try to listen to it to hear it.

I have only test-driven the RDX at this point, and I didn't notice the wine, probably because I was too busy playing with the navi and other cool features. However, I have always been a fan of turbo wine, I like the way it sounds, I would like it if my RDX (when I finally buy one) has a lot of wine! But thats just me..
