new engine oil every 4 months - rdx runs like new

I just changed my engiine oil and filter on Friday, about 4 months since the last change. The MID was showing 40%, my wife does not drive the rdx too much, but lots of city and hill driving. After 4 years, the engine still runs and sounds like brand new. Pennzoil platinum is a really good synthetic oil.
Total oil change cost per year = $100. well worth it.

How many miles on car? consistent use of Pennzoil?

you should just follow the MM it takes in to account short distance drives, stop and go's etc...

I've been running PP since I got the RDX as well, looked under the oil cap its soo clean I can eat off of it. Got 77K on it now.

True, but at $30 per oil change (DIY), spending $100 per year to keep engine running smooth and like new is well worth it. Plus, every time I change the oil, even after just 4 months, it is quite dark coloured, it is definitely doing its job in cleaning up the engine.

I'm not faulting the OP for his obsessive oil changes or the positive results, but my RDX is also coming up on four years, has only had service done when the MM got to 5%, and also still runs like new!

What is the correct time to change the oil on our RDX? I am down by 20% - I normally change around 15 - 20%? My car has 5k in miles on it.

I usually wait until I'm under 10% for both the TSX and RDX before I set an appointment at the dealership to change the oil. I purchase my own Mobil 1 oil for both vehicles from Walmart to save a little $$. They get it done in a few hours and they wash the car afterwards.

I have a bad habit of not checking my oil between changes. Make sure you are in a safe oil level when you are getting close to change time.

Mau is the guy to talk to. Mau you are a BTOG forum right any info?
I hear Penz platinum is really good, Mau reccomends it. I am RP

Op oil always does that. there are oil passages that "durty" it up right away and really there is no way of visually seeing the particles,as most are traped in the oil filter. Exhaust smell is normal too. I cracked my h22a4 open to pull the crank, rods, and pistons out and well in there oil can get trapped in the "hallows" --bolting holes-- of the block and get noxious... I had a head ache every time I was in the garage until it aired out 8-9 days later.. swore I could smell it in the house

anyway there is enough time for it to get dirty but it is about 60 it's life.

If your dealer is filling your RDX up with Rotella then they are voiding your warranty.

Rotella does not meet the HTO-06 standard set by Honda specifically for the RDX. Rotella is good oil (T5 and T6 both) but unfortunately if you care about warranty its not the oil to use.

Kaze66218 I know what you mean by the smell, I had an oil catch can on my Prelude and cleaning that out it would smell especially with all the moisture mixed in, it would smell and look like salad dressing lol.

Once a week take your cars to fuel cut off (~6800 RPM on the RDX) its good for it especially if you or your partner drives very conservatively rest of the time. I did this with the prelude, I do it with the TL and I try to do it with the RDX when ever I drive it and so far no issues with the motors on all 3 cars (sold the lude with 216K on it and motor was mint!)

Well if they are doing changes with rotella, then im sure if something goes on they are not going to void the warrenty. That would be a massive law suit if they did with documented changes at the dealer. but regardless, any syn with a proven uoa that can show that the motor is showing proper wear results then it should never be a issue

@Mau, Did you ever crack the block open, inside there are passages and bolt holes under(above if in the car) the crank around the bearings. Dark black evil oil from 1997! Exhaust smell was like a 10-15x concentrated just for me, ran me out of the garage after 2 mins. Mid winter with temps at 20* I swear that has to be the original oil in those passages and the circulation was horrible in those areas. I agree RP is over priced.

I should have taken a picture of the short block before I had it sent out for machining. After 30,000miles I switched to RP, the engine was pristine and zero deposits with healthy bearings but it's not just a oil that got me to that point it was also a regular filter change.

@those who don't know this...Oil is important to change at recommended intervals but I never see how anyone stresses how important changing the oil filter is, thinking of all filters, there maybe one that may be better than the other but replacing them every other oil change is better than changing the oil every 3000 miles.

@OP... A good item for anyone that has OCD for oil change is a magnetic oil and tranny plug from Blox/Kics/NRG/S2/????"google it etc."

I'd love to tell you where to get them but cheapest place changes everyday.

There are a few variations of this Neo or ceramic magnet (Neo being stronger) but an OCD'r person should have one of these too.

I just pick up some Mobil 1 and change my own oil today after work. (first time)
I use the DIY guide and it was easy.

No more paying $80 for a oil change! lol!
