The Land Rover LRX is set for a big Detroit debut next month, but you can see it now thanks to German enthusiast mag Auto Motor und Sport. They have thoughtfully posted a full photo gallery of the shortened, lowered Freelander-based Land Rover coupe concept, and thanks to the broken English provided by Google Translate, we can report some of the highlights, as well. The compact SUV boasts long doors and an athletic stance accentuated by a sloping roof, 20" wheels, and a somewhat sinister looking front fascia. The cabin takes on a 2+2 configuration, decorated in typical never-see-production concept trim. The shifter is mounted at the top part of the center console, with a fancy metal central controller for the four-wheel-drive positioned further down.

Looks pretty bad-ass! More to read and pictures to see at Autoblog...

It may be based on the Focus platform, but I see parent company Ford's influence, based on the Edge.

Not sure about it being based on a Focus or Edge platform, despite the family resemblance.

The freshly updated blog entry now includes an official Land Rover press release as well as official higher resolution photos and in greater numbers.

The release mentions that it's smaller than a Freelander 2 or LR2 and more of a "crossover", coining the the phrase "cross-coupe" but at the same time, describes 4x4 capability true to the Land Rover name and includes Land Rover's "Terrain Response" traction control system. The LRX's pair of passenger doors and 2+2 seating footprint leaves little room for cargo so this is not a very long or truly utilitarian chassis. At least the rear window doesn't slope low into the rear seat headroom like the EX35, so maybe the photo is just a bad representation of its layout.

I do not see the point of a 2-door CUV.
