Just Bought a 2008 RDX w/ Tech Last Week - MPG Question?

Hi guys! I'm a new owener of a 2008 RDX w/ Tech. I've been reading this forum since 2 months ago. I've driven it about 700 miles so far and I haven't been crazy on the throttle. I average about 17 MPG, 15 City and 20 Highway - substantially lower than usual. I took it to the dealership and they said they can't do anything unless the check engine light is on and even so they most likely won't find any problems. Would you give me some suggestions or solutions? Thanks so much!

Sounds about right for a sh-awd 08 RDX during the winter time. Depending on driving habits, you could get up to about 19-20 combined during the summer months (60% hwy at 70 mph).

I did the Hondata reflash of the ECU for extra power (+25HP/+30TQ). A side effect was my combined mpgs went up to between 20.3 -20.8 during the summer. I has been about 19.1 -19.5 during the winter months, depending how cold it was.

http://www.hondata.com/reflash_rdx.html

I'll say reflash and K/N drop in air filter could gain you +1 combined mpgs. The only other thing is do you have snow tires or all season tires on the RDX?

Not far off from what I get in my sh-awd '11... about 18-19 in the city, 22-ish on the highway... still running on the stock all-seasons.

Thanks guys!! I live in Northern Florida so the past week has been quite warm - hope the MPG will get better when it gets even warmer! I bought it in Southern Florida and drove it back so one of the tanks was nothing but highway. However I averaged 20.1 MPG that tank and it's the best I had so far. For the other two were 18.2 (65% highway) and 17.0 MPG (55% highway). I think it will be 15 MPG if I do 100% city ! By the way I have all-season tires.

Your mpg figures are very normal. The re-flash will get you and extra 1 or 2 (for off boost driving) and as your engine is 'run in' after a few thousand miles you may get another 1 or so.......all in all your car is normal

I just bought a 2007 rdx. I on the second tank of gas and average 18mpg so for.
Whenever we test drove it, the dealership was next to the freeway and we drove it for 20Miles and got 23mpg average. I hope it gets better mpg on longer trips.

I drove to Vegas with the wife last week and averaged 22.1 mpg from fill up to Vegas (about a 3 1/2 hour drive from my house). I do have the reflash.

It's rated at 17/21 or 22. Not the best mpg, just have to get used to it.

I just don't get it. I easily average between 25 and 26 mpg on the highway during the warmer months, cruising at ~70 mph, and I do use the turbo when necessary. My combined MPG is a little over 23mpg with ~ 70/30 hwy/city driving.

You are not Italian^ I get 17mpg with snow tire, 18 with Yokohama, and 19 with stock. Wife is good for 1mpg more than I.
Here is my take on mpg from another thread:

Thumbs up Another new 2008 tech owner

We just recently also bought a 2008 w/ tech. It's actually my wife's. I just asked her what kind of milage she gets and of course she doesn't know. What we both know is it's fun to drive and are happy with our purchase. First on the list is a decent iPod interface. I'm leaning towards the dice unit. Then a clear bra for the front end. Enjoy the ride.

For iPod interface, Neo would be a good choice!

I have never reset "trip B", so it acts as my lifetime mpg. It is currently reading 22.9mpg. I do try to feather the throttle when I can. But if you drive with any semblance of a lead foot, the mpg's will drop!

I also get about 25 highway/ 19 to 20 suburban (stock ECU).

With you driving around flat Florida, I wonder if your mpg could be improved a bit. How are your tire pressures?

the rdx is not an economy vehicle and it is a 4000lbs suv with sophisticated awd! during cruising i noticed that all 4 wheels are getting power (using dash computer) unlike many other crappy awd systems which only send power to rear or front when slippage is detected...co-infiniti-ugh! while this improves performance it reduces cruising fuel mileage hence your highway mpg will be disappointig. for reducing fuel consumption momentum is key! anticipate stops! you should also decrease rolling resistance which means getting rid of unecessary weight in the car and increasing tire pressure. reduce aerodynamic drag by driving behind trucks or behind traffic. the flow of traffic will reduce air pressure and create less drag. a dodge magnum managed to score 40+ mpg by drafting behind a truck. avoid using the turbo in 2-5 gear. close windows and sunroof. reduce energy consumption by turning off AC when its cool enough. avoid blasting music, the tech package has 450w amp that drains power which will force the alternator to draw more engine power for charging. turn off engine at red lights. burn and coast by accelerating to a certain speed and then letting go of gas to coast. repeat as necessary. drive at speed limits. most efficient speed for rdx is 50mph. by using hypermiling tactics i managed to score 26 mpg. but this was temporary and i went back to my regular leadfoot mode 17mpg ftw!! oh and try fuel additives like lucas upper cylindar lubricant. i use one every 3000 miles. use non ethanol containing fuel like shell vpower.

Hey R*D*X!

Mine works fine! I have bought three different Neo products and they all worked fine. Have you tried contact with their technical support? By the way does your RDX have the tech package?

I know! That's what I was wondering. Florida is so flat I should get a pretty "regular" MPG plus I thought my driving style is quite moderat. My tire pressures were way too high (40+) when I bought my RDX at the dealership so I deflated them to the normal range. However, I heard higher tire pressure actually increases MPG by a bit. It's just handling and some other things will be affected.

I'm curious to see how others are faring in all city driving. I drive a total 6 miles combined to work and I'm averaging 14~16 mpg. Granted, I fill up every two weeks but I get shitty range and MPG.
Any takers?

Im juz curious when you drive your RDX on winter, do you turn off your AC once you set the blower on?? I always set "air circulate" off on winter then once i turn on the blower @ 72 deg then i always press AC to off... I noticed that if you just set the temp without turning off the AC, your AC compresor will still run and will affect your MPG.

I recently purchased a 2008 RDX. After reading all the reviews I didn't expect it to be the most gas efficient automobile. After test driving it I fell in love with it. It is in a class by itself. One week prior to purchasing the RDX I purchased a 2011 TL w/ the TECH. Believe me I love my TL but after getting the RDX. I take the RDX and leave the TL for my fiancee.

I don't like air coming into the cabin. I set mine to recirculation all the time unless the windshield is fog up. But since you mention the AC button, I never thought of turning it on during winter. My thoughts are, A/C or heater on it will reduce you MPG. same thing with idling.

I dont think heater will affect MPG,The heater in your car comes from the heat of the engine which has no effect on gas mileage..

BTW on summer i always set mine to recirculation also, i like the new car smell of my car...

That A/C compressor is a bit of a draw on the engine so I turn it off too. If the windows get fogged up I turn it back on. The A/C unit turns on and off in an effort to reduce the moisture inside the rig without using too much gas. How much gas I'm saving by not using it is debatable, but at almost $4 per gallon I'll take what I can get.

I agree with Mr Marco. Whenever the car is turned on it will burn fuel no matter what. And I just filled up on 93 @ $3.83. Cost me $56 to fill up 14 gallons. I fill like I’m driving an Escalade. But mpg was spot on at 17 city.

FWIW, Yahoo news recently ran a story indicating that running the A/C has barely a negligible effect on fuel economy.

Depends on the car really, smaller engines like corolla or civic decrease engine power when AC compressor kicks in...

KC.79 - i was about to return my order but when i see the harness i think i know what he did wrong... i noticed that he tied the male connector close to female connector with tape, so my theory is he just probably plug the neo gateway to my SAT because there is no way the male connector can reach to the facory radio since it's tied close to female connector. This probably the reason why i can only see the ipod interface on my display screen but no sound since it's not connected to my factory radio...

To my undestanding male connector should goto the factory radio, the female should be connected to my SAT right and 24 pin connector on the neo gateway? If this is correct illl try to DO IT Myself tomorrow....... Thanks...

Wow..... These interfaces are usually so 'plug and play' all you do is
Can't believe that an installer would mess that up.... but i guess it happends!

You're right ... just do it your self

Keep us informed

Wspy - i think the tech guy was right, once you removed the socket from your SAT you need to connect the gateway harness (Isimple) directly to SAT and connect the other end to the factory socket ..

Some cars, you need to connect the harness (Isimple) at the back of your factory radio and connect the factory socket to the other end of the harness (Isimple)..

Im very hesitate to try another tech coz i dont wanna to pay another labor for nothing...the instruction is very simple and im 90% positive that bestbuy tech understand the instruction and knew what he's doing ...
