Got NYS Inspection done today at local Midas shop. Guy brings car out, says, "Your car passed, but I wasn't able to read the vehicle mileage without resetting your service indicator." I say, "How did you know how to reset the service indictor?". He says, "I looked in your manual." I resisted the urge to point out that since he was already in the manual, he could have looked up how to get past the service indicator to view the vehicle mileage. Apparently, he thinks Acura would build a car where there are periods when the driver cannot check how many miles on the car. Serenity now...

So, the vehicle has been calling for service for a few weeks, and was down to 5% (was planning to do the called-for services myself next weekend). I never bothered to notice what service is being called for, so now what should I do. My vehicle currently has ~12,000 miles, and the following service history:

4/23/08: bought car new
8/16/08: 3,912 miles, Service "A", completed in my garage (oil and filter change only).
12/14/08: 8,047 miles, Service "B1", completed in my garage (oil and filter change, visual inspections, tire rotation).
05/15/09: 12,000 miles, Service "???????????"

Any thoughts what the next called-for inspection would be?

YOu will likely have to change the differential fluid...mine came up at around 14K and I have heard from other people that it comes around 12K...oil change and probably tire rotation.

I think that the "visual inspections" are a bag of sht, they just make an already over priced oil change more expensive. They should do those inspections as a courtesy.

I'm at 12k and the differential change didn't come up. I'm assuming it will on the next one for sure.

So far, all I've had is oil changes and a tire rotation. Skip the rest of the service junk.

yeah, better safe than sorry....he should change the differential fluid, because if it wasn't there it will come up in the next couple of thousand miles...yours will be up soon too..

yea - the first fluid change is quick, id get that done, after the first change it should be good for 50k

Thanks all for the feedback. I think I'm going to wait until the next service (~16K miles) to do the diff fluid, and just do an oil/filter change this time. I'd rather risk doing it later than the computer thinks I did it than earlier than the computer thinks I did it.

Next service at 16K? what do you mean by that? there is no "scheduled" maintenance/service in this car (as far as I know), the computer simply tells you "it's time" regardless of mileage.....right? you are now at 12K, that's only a 4K difference...

It's your car, so I am not going to push the issue, but you are not really saving anything in terms of money or time, think about it, you will have the car in for service, so you might as well do the differential fluid change then....and if you don't pay now, you will have to pay later, so no real savings.....
