Question Engine Oil Life Indication

After my first 500 miles, I noticed my oil life remaining indicator shows 90%. From other owners of later generation Acuras here (I'm a first-time Acura owner), is this normal? I don't drive my RDX hard, except for the occasional overtaking.

The first interval is probably going to be a little bit shorter than your later ones. Don't fret about it too much. Also, the oil indicator only goes down in 10% increments. Read about it more in that big fat book sitting in the glovebox called the owner's manual.

Any other great info you want to share? I've been meaning to read it, but just haven't had the time!

I've read pg 330 of the manual, before the original post, and now re-reading it per CGTSX2004's suggestion

90% indicated life means that the calculated oil life is 90%-81%. The manual doesn't say whether oil life is typically linear or non-linear hence my post. I hope not, so I expect to see the oil change reminder to come on around August next year if I use the RDX at my current pace.

I love the maintenance reminder system (the A, B, 1 through 6)! Brings me back to my aircraft maintenance days!

So, I've now done 1000 miles on the RDX. And the oil life indicator is showing 80% (which means the calculated life is in that range). The history is as follows:
  • Delivery: 100%
  • 500 miles: 90%
  • 1000 miles: 80%
Anyone else who has done 1000 miles can share their indicated oil life remaining?

Well, let's see. You get 90% at 500 miles. If 500 miles is 10% of the oil life, that means 5000 miles for the first change. If 1000 miles is 20% of the oil life, that means, lo and behold, 5000 miles for the first oil change. So it looks to be linear and 5000 miles seems reasonable for the first oil change.

Thanks. I wanted to get a sense of the linearity, if any.

Also, not being familiar with synthetic oil, is 5000 miles typical?

My BMW was 15,000. The RDX maintenance schedule is a part of the manual I haven't read yet.

I have 1400 miles and it is 80%. 95% are highway miles.

There is no linearity. The oil change interval is going to be determined by your driving habits. Someone who does mostly city driving with a lot of cold or warm starts is going to need to change their oil more quickly than someone who does hundreds of nothing but purely long-distance highway miles. Each person will get a differing result on their oil life display in the MID as a result.

The MID display shows the feedback from several sensors that test the oil for various factors.

I just had an oil change at about 5000 miles. The oil indicator was at 10%, and gave me a A1 maintenance code.

^sorry to go OT, but you already have 5000 miles on your RDX? Has the gas mileage improved since new?

Did anyone go back to the dealer to get the oil change? How much did it cost? An Acura rep actually warned me it's a bit pricier...relative to other Acuras of course.

nevermind, forgot they only came out a month ago. Guess theres no way to edit my post.

Unless you actually have put crazy miles on it in the first month....

Don't know if this helps, But my first change @ 5500 miles on my new TL costs me nothing as my dealer gives away first oil change. Did charge me $35 for tire rotation though.

I hated my BMW, but loved the free scheduled maintenance.

I bought it as they rolled it off the truck. And I like to drive it.

The charge was $84 because it requires synthetic oil (Mobil One or equivalent).

i'm not sure why it'd be more than other acuras other than material, unless it takes longer to perform, but FYI....go to a honda dealership instead of acura, same parts, same oil, cheaper labor rate. that is if, of course, you are going to a dealer for an oil change in the first place.

$84 at the dealer? is that just an oil change? my dealer charged me $150 for oil change, tire rotation, and "checking" the items on the checklist. i believe it was the B1 schedule. i have a TSX.

$84 for the A1 schedule at the Acura dealer. I realize the Honda dealer is cheaper, but I get better service at the Acura dealer here. Not as busy, etc.

OMG, $84 for an oil change? Wow. I may have to rethink this potential purchase.

Actually, they're free for all the cars. It's an offer that the dealership makes as part of the sales process. As long as the car was purchased from them, the original owner gets free oil changes for the duration of their ownership.

I received a book with coupons in it offering a free oil change and a touch up on the phoney wax thing they stuck me with. Also, the salesman said the first 3 oil changes are free? Was the lifetime oil something unique to the dealership? Or is this a hidden Acura thing?

Every dealership is different in regard to these things...

You people that complain about the cost of an oil change need to learn to do it yourself. It ain't that tough to do. Done it myself on ALL my vehicles. You can dispose of the oil at lots of locations, like Auto parts stores, some NAPA's, etc. Look under the RDX sometime. It's all right there!!!
