Easy to change oil and filter in RDX?

Anyone here has done their own oil/filter change? Is it difficult to get to the filter like most Honda's are? My TSX is a classic example where I get my local mechanic to do it, because I would get too much of the dirty oil messing up on the garage floor.

Mike,

Thanks for the link. The video was very informative and interesting. Shawn Church does a good job pointing out the various parts and giving a little side note when appropriate. I think he also did the video for the test drive along the dragon highway. The guy loves VTEC.

Oh my goodness... the oil filter is mounted vertically up, so when it's taken out, the residula oil will definitely keep leaking out. Well, it will probably be my local mechanic doing this now.

uh mav, just use one of those flat, oil drain pans! The excess oil will drain down to the pan, not all over.

All of the Honda/Acuras I've had mount their filters this way. Once you've changed it a couple times and get a feel for that last turn before the filter gives way, you can minimize the spill. Just need to have to an oil pan underneath when you remove it.

True... But my SAAB 9-3, has the oil filter cartridge installed inside the engine compartment and can be easily accessed by removing it straight up... no drips...

Even with an oil pan, it will be a mess...

If you turn the oil filter off slowly, it will start to drain, (slowly) down the side of the filter, into the pan. Let it drain for some time, then you can take it off and lower it to the drain pan. NOT that messy. You can go to a drug store & buy rubber gloves if you don't want your hands dirty. I've done many, many vehicles w/ similar setup's of the oil / oil filters & have never dripped more than a SMALL drop on the garage floor. It ain't that tough! Trust me.

not that hard and much better IMO than one that is turned upright...

doing an oil change in my RX7 is painful because the filter is right side up and the engine compartment is so cramped... always need to get very creative with newspaper to try to keep the oil from the filter from running all over the place... hard to get your hand turned quickly enough...

i was happy to see how the placement of the oil filter in the RDX... not that i own one... yet.. : )

Can one simply slip under the vehicle, without jacking it up, and do the oil filter change and oil drop? Does the RDX have enough ground clearance to do that?

That would depend on how big you are!! I'm 6'2" tall, weigh 260 7 I got under there to servey the area & it was fairly easy to move around. Jacked up a bit by a large floor jack a couple inches would do the trick. Don't go to high w/o jack stands!

One of the easiest I've ever changed.

No skid plates to remove.

No jack required (average sized noggin/chest/upperbody).

Definitely use the drip pan.

Bought my filter from the Acura dealer, $6.65. A bit high if you ask me, especially since it's the same filter on my '06 Honda Civic. Anyone know where to get deals on Acura parts online?

Cheers all,
John

Glad to know that... I am looking forward to changing the oil myself in my RDX.

My TSX has it's oil changed at my local mechanic, where i supply the synthetic oil and filter. Didn't want to get too involved and dirty with jacking up the car, trying to get to the oil-filter, oil-dripping over the plastic protection cover for the oil pan....
