Acura Care Post-warranty repair expectations

Base RDX had 86700 miles with certified warranty ending 2/14. Dealer serviced in IL and TX. Dealer quoted $4000 plus on Steering Rack Pinion Assembly ($2062), AC system ($1337), and rusted catalytic converter heat shield ($306). Since AC and leaking steering system were common in our cars, I called Acura Care - a claim manager will be giving me a call Monday if they can contribute part of the cost since I also owned a prelude since 1999. Does anybody had a success on this even out of warranty. I only have minimal claims such as struts and blown speaker and mad that this major problems starting to show up. Service advisor told me that cost may be higher due to rust, rusted bolts that may need cutting that servicing it may open a Pandora box - I told him that car spent most time in Chicago winters.
Pending maintenance also includes: front&rear brake pads replacement, brake flush, two new tires which will make the total to 6k. Question is this 6K spend worth it or just trade it in. Plan to keep car for 3 more years.

So, the certified warranty expired last Feb 2014? year of vehicle, and how long have you owned it?

1) there is an extended warranty from Acura for the A/C clutch. Need to read for exactly what is covered: warranty extended to 7 years or 100K miles.

2) problem with the PS rack? leaking? was fluid ever changed?

3) guess you must balance maintenance cost against new car payment, or *used* car payment or direct cost.

News to me - I have only heard of the leaking O-ring on the power steering pump inlet hose connection.

What? I've owned a half dozen HMCo products over my many years of automotive ownership. They still over-charge me for shit I don't need. Brand loyalty only counts if you've owned something with 500K on the ODO and they use your image in an advertisement.
On another note, I do have a friend with a 2G TL that got a new tranny for only 25% of the cost. Doesn't hurt to ask...

Replaced the power steering rack and pinion on my 07'w/tech at 80,590miles. Wrote to Acura Care and they split the cost with me. Rack was leaking on driver side into boot.

That's why I'm giving it a try with Acura Care. My 1997 Prelude transmission was replaced for free around 85K miles.

May I ask how long it take for them to get back at you? Was the car under warranty that time?

[QUOTE=dcmodels;15229334]So, the certified warranty expired last Feb 2014? year of vehicle, and how long have you owned it? Yes, it's 07 and was purchased on Feb 2007 with 1000 miles on it.

2) problem with the PS rack? leaking? was fluid ever changed? Fluid was never changed and not in maintenance code.

Car was not under warranty, that's why I wrote to them. It took them a few weeks to send a check after I submitted the paperwork. I was very happy with every aspect of the service I received from Acura Care. I had no expectation of them to do anything for me. It was a shot in the dark.

What is wrong with the AC system and how much are you going to be using your AC between now and next Spring. I know the AC system is involved when you use your defroster. In terms of the catalytic converter heat shield - cut it off and you are good to go. Rusted and noisy (banging/flapping/loose) heat shields are common to many makes and models. Most folks just have them removed all together.

AC sometimes is blowing hot air but usually last a day and back to normal again. AC clutch is culprit per diagnosis. I relocated to TX a year ago so it's a must but I'm not in a hurry to replace it.

Even being in TX, I don't see you needing to use your AC all that much between now and the Spring. See if you can find an independent Honda repair shop and a Honda dealer will be cheaper than your Acura dealer.

I'm so surprised I hadn't found this thread before, we had all the same problems on our '08 RDX Tech. The A/C unit was broken, and we put in a new power steering rack as well. All out of warranty, but since we were willing to pay full price for the steering issue, Acura covered all parts but not labor of the A/C issue. Came out to be around $2200 or so, not too bad for all that plus fixing leaking differential seals.

$2200- Not too bad for both AC and steering rack. Dealer will not negotiate price on AC. No more groan however s
teering is little bit tight now.
