AC went wacko today in 90 degree heat

Driving from Dallas to ATL and the AC started acting up right when I got to Shreveport. It was 90 degrees in the afternoon when it started to blow cool air. I tried turning down the temperature thinking that my Freon might be running low. Nothing happened. The fan started to making this 'hissing sound'. I pulled over at the rest stop and popped the hood. The AC line was totally frosted like what you typically see in your freezer at home. It also seemed like something broke and water was everywhere. I turned off the AC and turned on the fan and endured the heat for another 3 hours. Stopped at another gas station and rechecked. This time the AC line/pipe was completely defrosted and no trace of ice or frost. I turned the AC back on in auto mode and at first the air was cold then it became cool and same thing happened as before, the AC pipe/line was completely frosted over. Not sure what exactly the cause. I think something broke along the line. I'm bringing it to the dealer next week. Any ideas as of what might be the culprit? See pics for more detail.

from what i'm reading online maybe it was due to a bad compressor. Damn, my car just passed the 60k warranty by 500 miles. I guess I'm gonna have to pony up some $$$ to fix it.

See if Acura would help you out a little. Compressors arent expensive if you do it yourself that is

I don't know jack about AC, but if it is the compressor clutch by any ''chance'', there is an extend warranty on those (see https://acurazine.com/forums/1g-rdx-2007-2012-147/j-001-rdx-tsbs-821930/ , TSB 12-039).

ac clutch

Yeah, I saw that thread on the TSB. But that doesn't mean that they have to fix it. Besides, I didn't get a letter about it. I guess I will have to be nice asking for a goodwill repair and see how it goes. Also, I'm gonna bring the car back to the dealer that I got it from and hopefully they'll take care of me. Appt is tomorrow at 2 pm.

Wtf??

This car just acting stupid today. This morning the car AC started fine with plenty of cold air. I ran it for 30 minutes going to work. Tried again at lunch and no issue with warm or cool air blowing. Just straight up cold air. I hope I can use the pics as my evidence tomorrow. I doubt that they can duplicate the problem unless they drive the car for 3 hours with the AC turned on.

There are many threads on AC, both on the RDX and the TL as well as other models, you may wish to read them all?

Not sure how a fan makes a *hissing* sound, but that sound may be the venting of freon, indicating the following problem:

Thanks but my problem seems to be isolated and I am not able to replicate. Today I took my car for an hour drive to work. The AC was on 'auto' mode the whole time and no issue at all. Took the car to the dealer (1 hour drive) AC on and no issue at all. I'm scratching my head at this point. The dealer will keep my car over night to check. From what they are saying that I'm out of warranty (700 miles to be exact). I will have to wait until Monday to find out exactly what needs to be done.

got it fixed!

I finally got it fixed. As it turned out the seal on the AC pipe was broken, thus creating the leak. They also replaced the relay. It would have cost me $255 for the whole repair but after asking the service rep to waive my repair cost and do it for me under 'goodwill repair'. He told me flat out no so I took it up with the salesman who sold me the car last year. He talked to the service manager and I guess they called Honda to get it approved as a 'goodwill repair'. All is good in the end. I got my car back with a better AC system. One thing I noticed was that my car didn't pick up like it did before. I hope they didn't wipe out my Hondata reflash. That would suck for me.
