25.2 MPG -- 596 mile roadtrip

The RDX was loaded with 3 adults and 200 lbs of luggage.

It was across Pennsylvania and back on I-76, through about 3000 feet of elevation changes in the Allegheny Mountains. The cruise control was set at 72 mph with some shorter periods at 65 mph. Air Cond was on the entire trip.

I reset Trip A each direction. The westbound leg was 280 miles, 95% highway and yielded 24.7 mpg.

On the the eastbound leg we exited I-76 at Somerset to see the Flight 93 crash site. It came to 316 miles, 89% highway and yielded 25.7 mpg.

This averages 25.2 mpg and is nearly identical to the 25 mpg that Consumer Reports got in their testing. For an AWD vehicle with impressive passing power climbing steep mountain grades, I find that quite satisfactory.

We are very happy with this car.

That is great! Thanks for the write-up...

Now, if Honda can come up with a "intelligent" drive system, that allows you to switch to full FWD or automatic sensing, whichever (but I reckon the latter to be a little bit challenging to do); that would be great for fuel economy when you don't need the AWD grip, like driving on a somewhat straight freeway or dry conditions.

Very good results. I know it's capable of producing the EPA average, but it obviously takes some constant driving to get the results. The highest/best mileage I got was 22mpg, but didn't go too far on the highway.

Those are encouraging numbers. The RDX is totally manageable mpg-wise if you don't mash the pedal.

I've only got 400km on mine and I'm getting 17-18mpg already...90% city driving (most of the time medium to heavy traffic)...on par with the X3 ('05) and a bit better than the MDX ('02). I expect it only to get better with time.

I get 16 if I don't baby it... 80% or so in City...

A 300 mile road trip (each way) to Cal up and down mountains from 0 - 6000 ft, averaging around 75-80, I got about 21... I could see it getting 25 on flat roads and doing about 70mph

I've surpassed 11k and on long flat stretches of highway if i set cruise to 55-60 I will peak at around 27 mpg. No complaints here

The best I ever got was 27mpg for a full tank of gas. That was driving through Wyoming and Montana on pretty flat highways with the cruise control set at 75mph most of the way. I don't know if the elevation in those states has much effect on mpg.

25.2 mpg is VERY impressive. I took a 1,000 mile road over the weekend in my 05 Murano and it returned an avg of 19.8 mpg....caveat: a few of those miles were spent in the triple digits though.

Looks like I may consider the RDX (alongside the Infiniti EX and upcoming 2G Murano) as a replacement for my Murano next year.

At those speeds you are largely fighting wind resistance.

Does the Murano's computer give you an MPG readout? What are you getting above one hundred??

Similar experience

I haven't logged in or posted in a while, but I signed in just to tell a similar story. I just got back from an 1800 mile trip. Much of the trip was on the long and winding Blue Ridge Parkway with some interstate and city driing. I spent looonnngg periods of time at full boost on steep inclines and did lots of braking and accelerating through turns, and had expected dismal MPG results. My MPG at the end of the trip was 23 MPG! In the past, I had only barely managed this if I reset the trip A after reaching cruising speed on the interstate in the flat lands of Florida and checked it before exiting into city driving. I noticed the unusually high numbers towards the end of my trip and reset my Trip B during the last 200 miles of my trip which was mostly flat driving at ~70 MPH with ~10% city driving and managed 26 MPG during that stretch!

I guess this engine sees some notable improvements in mileage as the engine ages (I have 13,000 miles now).

The info screen displays the mpg. (How accurate it might be is debatable.) I was not at triple digits for any prolonged period of time, just mile or two sprints along I-90 (NYS Thruway). The mpg readout decreased to ~19.4mpg not long afterwards.

That is good to hear. Don't mean to take the wind out of anyone's sails, but it has been documented here that our trip computer's mpg figures are off by 1-1.5 mpg. So 25.7 would be ~24.7. Still, those are very decent numbers for such a heavy, well-equipped and loaded-down vehicle.

A little off topic, but does anyone know what kind of impact driving in 100-110 degree weather on a daily basis should have on gas mileage?

I don't know if the heat has any affect on engine efficiency, but running your AC at full blast all of the time is not going to be good for MPG.

I finally tried calculating mine at fill-up. The Trip A said 20.4 for the tank, and I calculated 20.2.

306.5 miles/ 15.195 gal = 20.17 mpg

Bear in mind that if the fill-up is off by 1/2 gal (car not on level pavement, different temperature fuel) it can affect the calculation significantly:

tilt allowing more fuel or colder, denser fuel results in extra 1/2 gal: 306.5 miles/ 15.695 gal = 19.53 mpg

tilt allowing less fuel or warmer, less dense fuel results in less 1/2 gal: 306.5 miles/ 14.695 gal = 20.86 mpg

The difference between 19.53 mpg and 20.86 mpg could be just those factors.

We are very happy with this car.
Amazingly, one of the major car mags last year published their overall mileage at around 13.5. No idea how hard they were driving, but I'll bet the turbo was spooling all the time.

Nice! 25 mpg is impressive considering the load and the A/C being on the whole time. I average about 21 mpg in mine.

I regularly get 27mpg when I use set the cruise control at 75mph for a full tank of gas on a long highway drive. I can only assume that people getting much less than 20mpg are driving with a very heavy foot in mostly stop-and-go traffic
