Angry 2012 Acura RDX Turbo

I have longed for a dependable, sporty, luxury SUV that I could have for 5-10 years without any major repairs. I'm impeccable about regular maintenance schedules, too.
I thought I had that in the Acura RDX Turbo - I WAS WRONG.
At 125,000 miles or so, the turbo emissions "check engine soon" light comes on. We call a repair shop and they said to bring it in asap.
So we did. And guess what - they want $7k to fix my vehicle that is worth $14k.
I have always heard of friends having Hondas and Toyotas that they drove to the 300k mark without any problems, virtually until the wheels fell off.
Thanks alot. So much for any vehicle being reliable in this day and age.
So much for technology and value.
And don't get me started on domestic brands either - they're worse.

This is the 3rd Generation Forum... Sorry for your troubles, but are you trying to say "buyer beware" because of your experience with your 7-year old-car and that the same thing might or could happen with the 2019 RDX because they're similar cars (how?)?

I'm simply amazed your 2012 RDX Turbo with 125,000 miles is worth $14K. Wow, that's really good. If that's the case, my 2017 RDX with under 22,000 miles has got to reel in some serious coin.

I have 125K on my BMW turbos, and the mechanic said I needed a new water pump. Which I did. But if you have a turbo, it means everything you need to repair is because of it. The danged turbos wore out some of my brakes and tires over the years too. And even though I do my own filters, that durned cabin filter had to be changed. And don’t get me started on how many wiper blade sets that turbo put me through.

Now I can definitely see how you could blame the turbo for those items.

So I have 75K miles until my 2011 RDX turbo craps out. At my rate of 3,500 miles per year, it will take 21 more years until I have a problem with it. If nothing else breaks, which it has not in seven years (4 years with me), I would say I have done well. You have 125K miles on it, sucks it broke. But you have 125k miles on it.

you know you are able to get multiple quotes and diagnosis, right????????
for $7k, that's swapping out the whole drivetrain engine and transmission with new engine and transmission.
why would anyone would go that route?!!!!!??

I'm still waiting to hear what went wrong. Seriously. You could replace the entire drivetrain with a perfectly good engine and transmission from a salvage for less than $7k.

Maybe the frame warped and the body needs to be lifted off in order to replace the entire chassis. That might cost $7k.

Perhaps, the shop is trying to take the OP as a sucker.....Sure if I was restoring the car to brand new and had $7k to blow on fixing the car up......
however, used parts even tho used, are still good parts.
depending on what's broken with the RDX, you could grab a used engine for less than $1500 and have it installed for less than a grand.

That's a good point. They're probably telling her the turbo pistons are bad and the flux capacitor fluid needs to be flushed.

lol gotta give yourself credit man! you know a lot more about engines than you think!
( i remember a couple months ago, in a thread you mentioned that engine stuff isnt your forte.)

but i guess it's all about troubleshooting or diagnosing the problems, which was awesome of you to ask what exactly is wrong with the car. I am curious as well.

RDX first gen turbo engine has been very reliable. Ive only seen few isolated cases with turbo problems. There is no major problem, lets not create rummors
