More extreme Acura NSX coming in 2018?

Set to wear the Type R moniker, the range-topping NSX will benefit from an evolution of the standard coupe's gasoline-electric hybrid drivetrain that will be tweaked to provide well over 600 horsepower. The Type R should be able to sprint from zero to 62 mph in about three seconds, a figure that will put it on par with much more expensive supercars.

Acura will complement the extra power with upgraded brakes on all four corners and a thoroughly revised suspension setup. The stiffer suspension will undoubtedly compromise the relative comfort that the NSX nameplate has long been known for but it will make it quicker around a track.

The Type R will weigh a lot less than the standard NSX thanks to the use of body panels crafted out of carbon fiber. Official figures are not available yet but sources close to Acura told Australia's Motoring that the R is expected to tip the scale at roughly 3,400 pounds.

Visually, the R will be instantly recognizable thanks to a full track-inspired body kit that will include a more muscular-looking front bumper, side skirts and a big spoiler out back. The R will ride on model-specific alloy wheels.

If the rumor materializes, the Acura NSX Type R will be presented at a major auto show in 2017 and it will go on sale in select markets shortly after.

Acura NSX Type R Rumored to Make 600 HP » AutoGuide.com News

With all the hype surrounding the Civic Type R, don’t be surprised if Honda unleashes an Acura NSX Type R too.

The production 2016 NSX made its debut at this year’s Detroit Auto Show and Acura confirmed it will have over 550 hp, though exact specifications haven’t been revealed.
Now, rumor has it that the company is working on a hotter NSX Type R that will have at least 600 hp and will arrive showrooms by 2018. The new NSX is powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 and incorporates a unique hybrid system and a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission. An electric motor is located at the rear of the vehicle, while two independently-operating electric motors are positioned at each side in the front.
Along with extra performance from its engine, expect the NSX Type R to go on a diet thanks to carbon fiber aero parts, helping bring the total weight down to around 3,415 lbs. Combined with its suspension and brake upgrades, the NSX Type R will compete with some of the world’s finest exotics from the Audi R8 to the Ferrari 488 GTB.

I think before they build a rocket version they'll probably build a convertible, or at least a targa top. Not sure how they'll pull that off without carbon fiber tub knowhow and technology... maybe partner with McLaren? After all, they'll be giving them engines pretty soon for production cars. Just guessing.

They should build the "R" and there is a reason why: Even tho the TLX GT is doing just fine in the Pirelli World Challenge, lets face it, it is not a TLX. Perhaps the NSX "R" can take its place to compete with the Ferraris, McLarens and Lambos in that field. That would be a more fair fight in the GT category.

In Japan they already have NSX-GTs competing over there. Honda has announced a spider version but no release date. I wonder what the price point will be for the Type R.

There was a patent filed, with a few drawings: Honda / Acura mid-engined sports car leaked in patent images Some say its the new S2000, other say it may be a more extreme NSX. For all I know it could be a CLX ! It will all be revealed during the next Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

PS. of course Ford will up the ante and throw something on stage that nobody is expecting, again!

I love the GT and I'm excited to see it in action, but the price of the thing is just too steep. I would love to see an actual Corvette fighter out of the blue oval.

North America has some rollover and roof strength standards that will make a conventional convertible difficult. I suppose they could just forget about the standards that they support, but they've achieved some fame for aggressive forward looking implementation of standards, and I think that a fair number of American Honda will object to stepping away from those standards.

I don't necessarily know anything at all, but that looks more like the "Baby NSX" that might be available in Honda dealers, a smaller car with less HP, but still a Sport Hybrid.

I've seen drawings of that car with a reinforced Targa style roof, too.
