Even better, I was told the 2nd transmison is about to go with only 38,0000 miles. This is the second tranny.! To replace it will be $4200 no warranty.
Service manager said "just get rid off the car" we will give you 2 grand trade in.

I cant fix your transmission problem, but you can fix your EGR for about 10 bucks.
I called the acura dealership here in houston, and told them about my 97 cl 2.2 theyre gonna fix the carbon problem by cleaning the ports and change the oil the plugs and the wire, cap, rotor all that stuff for free cause its under 150 thousand miles....not under warrenty.....so try that if you have a 97 under 150 thous. miles...
Have you ran a can of Seafoam through there as well? My intake manifold was quite filthy, the sensor to the far right had quite a bit of grime (looked like dirty oil) and after I wiped it and sprayed down the other my idle was smoother for sure.

Accura fixed my daughter's 97 3.0CL under their extended emissions warranty. Replaced EGR, applied the EGR port mod to the induction manifold. I was a happy camper.
More recently, I got another letter from Accura CS offering the following:
- free replacement of ALL ignition parts [plugs, wires, coil etc] under extended emissions warranty.
- reimbursement of ANY money spent trying to fix emissions problems before having the warranty service. You need to produce receipts, but since I replaced the $250 EGR on my own dime before finding out [here on this very thread] about the warranty, maybe I get that $250 back from Accura.
Anybody ever heard of a vendor writing to alert you to a free service on a 140,000 mile car?? Frikin amazing!

I have 104k miles so I don't think I'll be getting this code for a while but I should check if the program is in effect in Calgary they aren't always. I'm not sure if I would tackle the cleaning.
Oh.. it's a friend of mine that's holding the cat. She says they live outside in the barn, so they don't get to see people all that much. That one is maybe a bit shy.

I got the tune-up under the warranty, and my o2 sensor replaced (had a CEL) as well all under that warranty. Could i have them clean my EGR even though i dont have a CEL? Or if the CEL comes on later for the EGR will they fix that?

The CEL needs to be on with an EGR code in the OBD system to trigger the mod.

Hello guys, first post here.
I got about six Hondas in the past five years.
I just bought a 97' Acura CL- 2.2 with 147K miles about three days ago.
The previous owner worked for Honda and told me about the engine light (currently on) and told me about a sensor that needed to be replaced.
Short story, I took the car to the same dealership (Planet Honda-Golden, CO) and they pulled the history on the car. The tech told me about a code number but it read EGR. I was told to bring the car next Tuesday for repair(EGR). It will cost me about $324.
But today I did a little reasearch online and found your thread so I will call Acura tomorrow.
I'll keep you post and thanks.
Way-to-go Planet Honda.
I currently own a 2007 Honda CRV-L AWD but previously owned a 06 Accord, 05 CRV, 00 Accord V6 Coupe, 04 CRV, 03 V6 Accord.

You guys are great, thank you.
I got intouch with Acura and set up the appointment and they even offered a loaner.
I just got the car and it came with 147,700 miles in it. You guys save me some money. Acura won't replaced the spark plugs or do a free tune up (It was already done in 2002).
My Acura is the CL 2.2.
Also took care of my alarm, now it chiprs when I lock or unlock the doors.
And I will polish the headlights using your tips posted by other members.
Great website, please keep up th egood work.
Thaks guys.

Just a follow up on the EGR.
Took it to a local Acura on a Friday morning and they gave me a loaner (TL) very nice and had it till Tuesday (5 days). Then took my CL home. Next morning the engine-light went on again.
Called the dealership and I was told to dropped it off.
This time they gave me the RDX.
I was told that they had to cleaned the fuel system.
Acura also change the cabin air filter at no charge (I gave the tech a $20).
Excellent service from Acura.
Car is running good now.
Thank you guys for the info on the EGR valve.
Out of the two loaners, I really enjoyed the RDX most.
The horse-power and sound system were really great.
Thanks again,
Silverboy

I have a 99
So as far as the Honda service bulletin that was posted. Is that pretty close to how we should do it with our CLs? Its all pretty similar correct? I have a 99 with 133,000 on it, so I cannot benefit from the warranty I guess. Im throwing the dreaded P0401 as well.

The warranty repair involves more than just cleaning the EGR ports. There's a modification kit that includes a new pipe. If you are repairing on your own dime, then its worth trying to buy the kit and the service instructions that the stealership uses. A friendly parts guy is all you need :-)

sorry to dig up this thread, but, I'm wondering if anyone has found a write up for how to clean the EGR ports for a 97 2.2? My mechanic replaced the valve and cleaned under the valve, but I don't think he cleaned elsewhere.
In Canada, Acura refuses to do the work that everyone here has gotten for free, even though the cars are made in the same factory!

good luck
That is apparently true if you live in the US. If you live in Canada, or are outside the warranty for this, its a straightforward procedure, I did it yesterday.
Take off 3 nuts holding fuel injector assembly, pull this out of the way, then underneath, above intake is where the EGR ports are, remove the 5 bolts, and then use a screw driver and carb cleaner to remove the buildup. You can do the same under the EGR valve. Reassemble, and it works great.

Just wanted to thank you for the directions!
Just did it and found a loooots of dirt and carbon inside the manifold. All four ports were completely blocked - no wonder I was getting P401 for over a year. Also cleaned the injectors...
