Temperature Gauge Problem

This may seem a bit ish, but I figured I'd get the community's advice, esp since a search didn't turn up anything.

Recently, (actually been a year or so) the temperature gauge stopped functioning. I checked the gauge itself during the speedo swap and it's fine, so clearly something else is up.

My next guess is that it might be the temp sensor, but reports I've read on here and google searches on an Accord's temp sensor claim that if the temp sensor goes out then a) VTEC wont enage and b) the CEL will be on. VTEC engages and the CEL is off, so should I be looking for something else?

If it is the temp sensor, am I correct it's physically behind the distro cap?

coolant temp sensor

Never heard of the check engine light coming on for that though, based on my experiences at the shop.
