Poor gas mileage
#5
It is a '97 2.2. I am calculating my mpg by dividing miles by gallons. Is this the right way? When I first purchased the car it got around 25 mpg, within a month or two it was getting only 21-23. Since I've had the car, I have had an oil change, tune-up, tranny flush, new shift solenoid, and new timing belt. It has about 124,000 miles. The transmission slips a little, but only when it's cold and I'm going up hill. If I were to take it in, what should I have them check? Also, just for comparison, what do you guys get for mpg?

mine keeps getting better now, i had shitty mpg in the colder months before <20 MPG
but now with almost all highway mileage, i'm getting over 30 MPG, it's a 2.2 5spd btw and mine just keeps getting better, dunno why...frequent and regular oil changes for my cl tho

Forgot to mention it's an automatic. That shouldn't make THAT much of a difference though. Filled my tank just today, let it get down to a quarter tank, and this time I got 21.9. I got an oil change today and filled it with supreme, so I'll see if this makes any difference.

I was averaging between 27 and 28. I too have a '97 2.2 Auto. I have 192K miles, stock everything. I just bought new tires and am now getting 25 to 26 which blows. I read that the tire can effect gas mileage as well. I would recommend maybe a tune-up and having the engine cleaned internally by a shop.
