P0704 Code

So today, I got a check engine light. It turned out to be P0704--torque converter/clutch system malfunction. Does anyone know what specifically is the computer measuring that is indicating a malfunction? The car has had a worn out clutch pack for 1st to 2nd shift for a while, but is only really an issue if I drive it cold. For the most part I don't really notice any significant increase in symptoms since the light came on. Should I expect a complete failure with no warning or will my symptoms start getting progressively worse?

So after almost $900 bucks, the transmission is shifting better than it has since I got it. All the symptoms such as: banging/clunking into 4th gear at low speeds, erratic 1-2 upshift when car was cold (meaning it held 1st too long and then banged into 2nd), and some clunkiness with the torque converter locking up have been solved at least for the time being. The parts that were replaced-- torque converter shift solenoid (part #POZ $252) and the Linear Pressure Solenoid (Part # P6H $324). The car transfers power noticeably better in all gears and shifts at the right time. Power downshifts into 2nd gear are still harsh though, but that's to be expected. As such, I don't gun it at low speed unless I have to. I've also gotten into the habit of downshifting myself if I anticipate a need to accelerate hard from low speeds. Hope this info is helpful to any of you that have some of the issues I had.
