Noisy AC compressor, But AC is still strong…

Hey guys… My AC is squeaky and sounds horrible when it kicks on but the AC is strong and working great. Is it possible it’s just the clutch / bearing mechanism? How would I tell? How hard is it to replace, and can it be done without effecting the un-pressurizing the system.

Any insight would be great!

If you shut the car off, remove the drive belt, and rotate the compressor pulley(outwe part) by hand, you should be able to feel and hear the clutch bearings grinding. The pulley may actually wobble a bit indicating excessive bearing play.

In-place repair w/o discharging system requires remove PS pump and alternator first. Then remove the AC compressor mounting bolts and tilt the compressor to access the compressor clutch assy. Remove clutch plate (don't loose thin shim washers under the plate), remove snap ring w/ snap ring pliers (this is tricky because access is not great,...patience). Tap rear outer edge of pulley w/ a hammer to remove from compressor. It may come away just by pulling w/ fingers. A new or used clutch assy is installed in reverse operation.

Suggest downloading the 94-97 Honda Accord shop manual from hondahookup.com. Your compressor design details are the same. The AC section is perfect your your application.

good luck

BTW,, If I want to get a new clutch I take it I just need #10 from this diagram?

Also I'll try to get a video of what I'm hearing when the AC kicks on...

Item 10 is correct part, and you may indeed have a hard time finding just that part except from Acura. You may have to buy the entire compressor to get a used part.

good luck

cool, Looks like it's about 130 for an OEM part off the web. That's better than replacing the whole compressor. Thanks again for the info!

Did you verify that bearing is loose and noisy? A fair amount of work to remove/replace the pulley to find out it's the compressor itself.

good luck
