car turning off while driving?

my acura 2.2 cl is turning off while im driving it, so it coasts and i have to turn it back on while driving it, which is pretty dangerous. it does it every 1 - 10 minutes or so of driving... the battery light and oil light comes on once it shuts off. I'm not sure what it could be..

can you have the codes read? and does it start right up after it shuts off?edit: i see it does

hell, in the olden days i would trade it and hope that it wouldn't act up at the dealer.

Sounds like your ignition switch is bad. Happens a lot on the 2nd gen TL.

Seems like it could be some electronic or ignition switch problem. Either way that's very dangerous because you will lose your power steering and power brakes very soon after the car turns off.

Imagine that you're headed toward a potential accident and need to swerve and/or slam the brakes to avoid it, and right at that moment, the car turns off. You slam the brakes but they quickly become useless, and the steering wheel becomes almost impossible to turn. You may not have time to react by turning the car back on and then performing emergency maneuvers. The same could happen in a sharp curve and screw you in the same way.

I would deal with this immediately if you want to continue use of that car.

Welcome to the forum!

Being that your topic is about a car covered by one of our model specific forums, I am going to move your topic to the CL forum. There you will be able to get answers from fellow First Gen CL owners!

Again, welcome to Acurazine!!

is your car currently idleing abnormally low, i had this same problem with my caddy, the revs would fall so low that the engine would just die.
Any service done recently or anything like that?
i'd say for idleing lower than normal could be vacuum lines being unhooked as that was my culprit, but besides that i have no cl specific suggestions
some of the other guys in the forum may have more info for you
good luck

How long has this been happening? Could be faulty charging system like your alternator.

Sounds like the ignition switch might be the culprit. Check to see if your car has a recall for the ignition switch. It was a common problem on some of the 97-99 Accords and CL's. Not every car falls under that recall. Have a dealership run you VIN number.

If it only happens when the RPMs are low, or when you are coasting to a stop, it could be your car needs a tune-up. I had the same problem and they adjusted the idle valve and changed out the spark plugs, and it runs much better.

Mushroom, like others have said have your ignition switch checked. Is your check engine light on? Run codes and advise us on what you find...
