99 cl 2.3 manual trans grinding noise when in gear
I have a 99 2.3 cl manual and it has 225k miles on it The past 2 weeks I have noticed and increase in noise coming from the front end. I put the car up on jacks and let the car idle in all gears. The noise is louder when at higher mph. I then wanted to see if one of the wheel bearings or cv joints might be going bad so I blocked the passenger side wheel and the noise was still there. I then did the same thing on the drivers side wheel and the noise is still there. This would rule out any wheel bearing, cv joint issue. I also checked the transmission fluid level and that was fine. Is the tranny going or could it be something else?
I have never replaced the clutch on this car but that part seems to be working fine.

yes the car is shifting fine. I suspected the bearings in tranny but not 100% sure. Any idea on a cost to replace these? Also, how long can expect to drive the car this way if any?

it all depends on how bad it is now but when did you noticed it ? if you take it easy avoid high rpms and DO NOT ENGINE BREAKING especialy on higher rpms it may serve you for like a 2-3 months depends on how you will take care of it... but it will get worse and worse...
set of bearings that you have to replace is not expensive but to drop the tranny and open the tranny it wont be cheap unless you have friends that may give a good deal.
once you there you want to replace the clutch if you want to keep the car and inspect the gears for wear.
bearings will run you around 90-$150 depends on how many you will decide to replace
check for leaks because it might be one of the reasons your bearings are done. if there is a leak replace the seals and fill up with recommended fluid
good luck
i had same issue lately and i bought new tranny which isnt any better so i do recommend to have taken apart and inspected
