So, with the helpful advice I have found here, I have made an appointment to have the egr service to my 97 2.2cl with 149,100 miles. I left my office tonight and the f#@$&ng car would not start. I could hear a whining when I tried to turn it over, but nothing. I tried to jump it, but again - nothing. I know that my EGR port is clogged and have been hearing a whining noise when I accelerate. What is wrong with my car?? I have owned it since '99 and have never( knock on wood) had any problems. the check engine light just came on last week for the EGR-

 

the EGR valve should not cause that, especially if the light just came on recently. Could very well be the starter or alternator. Also, have you checked the negative and positive cables on your battery. If those are loose, you wont start up

Have you replaced the timing belt ? If its snapped from what I understand the car will not start. Same thing happened to my boys Mazda. Parked for work came out car wouldnt start.
