Some updated pics of my 98 2.3

so i know it's been forever and a minute since i last updated about my car. Some of you might remember that my original F23 grenaded itself on my drive home from work. Anyway, the swap has been completed for a couple months, but due to a back injury at work, it's been sitting in the garage. I literally only drove it like 120 miles since the swap. So today, i took it out, sprayed the dust off and snapped a few pics of the finished project. The pics aint the best, but you get the point.

The vehicle

The swap

If anyone has any questions about the swap, feel free to ask.

Its a

H23A w/ Stock 2.3 5 speed trans
JDM OBD2B PCB ECU w/ Fields SFC
CM Clutch/ oem flywheel
All stock 2.3 CL engine mounts
Megan Header ---> RS*R catback (no cat)

Everything works, No CEL's and it drives nice

The car is daily driven and it was in no way intended to be fast, nor do i think it is. The H23 was the fastest way to get my car back up and running after the explosion.

IMO, This is the way the CL's should have come from the factory.

Sorry to hear about your back injury, glad you got the swap all set. Did you run into any major issues with the swap?

Car looks great, any future plans?

yeah you did. I was fustrated when i hurt my back ( disrupted a lower disk ) and thought that i just wanted to get rid of it all. Then i came to my senses and realized that i like this car more then i thought.

I fixed and connected the power steering and that made the car that much better. Having no power steering sucked ass. And with a bad back, it was 1000x's worse.

Anyway, thanks guys. The swap was easier then i thought it was going to be. Everything dropped in with no problem, had to swap 1 wire on the ecu side and add & wire up the IAB's but that was cake.

some misc. swap pictures

Just about to pull the blown F23

almost out

engine out

H23 waiting / ghetto work area

Engine's in, but having trouble with drivers side mount.

Then i figured it out, you need to swap the engine mount
stud from the F23 block to the H23 block. The H23 mount
stud is almost 1" longer and doesn't
allow the nut to tighten down all the way

custom exhaust adapter. Weird prelude
(obtuse triangle) flange ---> regular triangle flange
and bypassing the cat converter

JDM CRX SiR front clip at the engine importer i got my swap from

If i find any other pics, i'll post em up

You're absolutely right! They'd have no use for the J series if it did though lol. Get the H tranny, it's a world of difference!

Forgive my ignorance but what's so bad about the J series other than it has to go with the crappy auto transmission? Or why is the H23A so much better? I can understand if someone was going to boost it but the NA crowd seems to like them better too.

JDM H23 was better for me cuz it was less then $900 engine & ecu. You can't beat that with a stick .

I think people mostly boost the USDM H23 rather then the JDM Vtec version.

When compared with a H22, the JDM H23 VTEC makes more power all around except when compared to the
JDM Type S i believe, but dont quote me on that

The J30... you said it man, unreliable auto trans

Nice work, I'm in the middle of doing the same swap. I found hmotorsonline has a few spare PCB ECU's they'll sell, but when I asked them about using it with the H23V, they said it probably wouldn't pass emissions. I saw that you deleted the cat, so I'm guessing that wasn't a concern to you. Does the PCB have a plug for the data link? My car needs to pass inspection/emissions, so I'm going another route.

Also, how's it run with the F23 tranny? I was going to keep my F22 tranny but found an H23 5 speed for $200 locally and will probably pick it up tomorrow. I think it will be good for a daily driver.

I dont think the F series tranny does the H23a justice, you can fall out of vtec between shifts pretty easily with it. H tranny will make a world of difference. Idk bout the USDM H23 one, but the H22 trannies are great with it.

Like i said, this swap wasn't meant to be fast so the F23 trans i have for now is fine. If the trans blows and i bitch and cry to my wife about it, yeah an H trans is definitely going in. But for now, it's cool. The car is by no means is slow and IMO can still hold it's own in a daily driving situation.

Falling out of vtec between shifts while romping on it, not me dude. With the Vtec set at 5k rpm, it's easy to keep it in vtec between shifts. Than's not as big of a deal as i thought. Not beating it, yeah it's going to happen. The H trans is optimal, but the F trans will work if you need it to

H-Motors is right, with the PCB ecu, or with any obd2 JDM ecu for that matter, you'll loose the function of your DLC ( Data Link Connector) to get an emissions inspection. For me, it's no big deal, there's ways around that in NY . 1) You could always get a Obd2b Prelude Vtec ecu and swap the immobilizer or 2) Have it programed to your key by the dealer. With the JDM ecu, you'll also loose all EVAP functions as well.

Everyone else, thanks for the compliments.

Good deal, I'm happy to hear that. I checked out the m2s4 tranny today and it came out of the most beat to hell, POS Prelude I've ever seen, so I passed. It's hard to image the car will be quicker with the F22 tranny since it was so slow with the stock motor.

Just by looking at the number, the F22 is taller in every gear except 1st and it only have a 4.062 Final Drive. I drive 100 miles round trip to work, so fuel economy is also important.
