Headlamp restoration

I recently purchased a 97 CL and the headlights were turning yellow. So I figured I try some type of headlight restoration kit. I bought the turtle wax one, mainly cause it was $5 at Pep Boys. Both headlights took about 15 mins to do. They were more yellow than the pictures show, as it was overcast and not the best lighting to take the pictures. All in all, I was happy with the out come.

does this work permanantly? I tried the $20 Crystal View headlight restoration on the CL and my moms Mercedes, and it works, but after a couple of days, the parts that are good are REALLY clear and some parts are obviously yellow...its almost better to just have it all yellow, but anyway, does this actually work after rain and stuff too? Im looking for permenant results, im tired of rubbing plasticx and polish on headlights every 2 days!

Does the kit just include various different grits of sandpaper, plastic polish, and directions on how to wetsand? I've ready many threads on here about wetsanding and, although it looks scary, seen good resuts.

The trick is probably to find something to seal the lights after you polish them. I've always wondered what would be a good product to use. Maybe the guys in the wash/wax forum section would know?

There's actually a discussion about this going on right now

Use Meguiar's PlastX after you sand them. They'll look pretty good for a couple days and then you'll have to apply it again.

PlastX works wonders. The problem is, it doesn't last.

Would spraying on a plastic safe clear coat help prevent oxidation from forming?

I have this exact kit and just did this to my lights. They were a little bit foggier than napaj's. I did one with the white claryifying gel that it comes with and did the full pad sanding. Then I went on to the other light and noticed that after buffing nicely with just the lens clarifying gel it not only looked really clear already but was actually more clear than the one I just did with the whole sanding pad and lube combo. The one with the sanding had a slight haze of tiny tiny scratches but still looked great from a few feet away and the one I just buffed with the gel looked factory clear and shiny!

I would say try a really good buff with the clarifying gel ( I did it twice just for good measure) and see how they look before the sanding.

I buffed my headlights about a month ago and they now continue to stay clear. There has to be some sort of acrylic coating we can apply to help seal them.

I put my vote in for the Crystal Clear kit available from Wal-Mart at about 20.00. Applied properly, you will get almost a year's good results from this kit. It by the way contains a clear coating to be applied as the final stage of restoration which is no doubt the most likely difference between it and other products results.

I did the whole wet sanding with 1000 and 1500 grit then buffed with a high speed buffer. It's been a year since I did it. They now are fading again so im gonna try to just buff them again. Don't wanna sand again and go down to far.

I never sanded my headlights, I just use something like simple green to clean them real good and polished and waxed them just like the paint

I just restored my head lamps and it came out pretty clean. I read on some of the other posts out on the site followed the same steps others recommended.

1. Wet sand with 600 grid (for about 15 min)
then rinse
2. Wet sand with 2000 grid (for about 15 min)
then rinse
3. Buffed with Turtle Rubbing Compound (x 2)
then rinse
4. Applied the Meguir's PlasticX (x2)

600 grit? and for 15 mins? What you will go to far down on the lens. I only sanded for a brief time not even 2 minutes. Wet sand 1000 for a minute or so clean. wet sand with 1500 for a minute or so. Clean. Clean again. Then hit with a high speed buffer with compound. Then watch it gleam

I use the 3M stuff for oxidized boats, like fiberglass and such.

lol wetsand is the only way youre gonna get em to stay looking decent. 8my-cls01 had the steps down right, but id reccomend buffing it with a cutter afterwards to get them crystal clear again. just be careful not to burn it.

new to the forum (just bought 98 CL) - can someone direct me to a post that has detailed steps (maybe even pics) for clearing up hazy/yellowing lenses? All these posts are helpful, but having never done it before, I need more specifics, thanks!
