DIY: Changing Security LED
DIY: Changing Security LED
Needed:
1 3mm LED – Color of choice
Fine point soldering gun – low wattage – Radio Shack has a 15 watt one for $8
Thinnest silver bearing solder you can find
1. Remove the security light panel (I ripped mine off with a screw driver and broke something under it, the real way to take it off is by taking off the door panel and unscrewing it, obviously much more advisable.
2. Remove the black backing from the bottom of the security indicator. This will reveal a small circuit board with a resistor, and one red frosted LED. The resistor on there will work, so it doesn’t' need to be removed.
3. Remove the old LED by reheating up the soldering points on the underside of the LED.
4. Cut the new LED to a height similar to the red LED removed from the board.
5. Re-install the new LED by reheating the solder on the board and pressing the new blue LED into place.
6. Take outside and plug into car where it was removed from. Lock car so that the indicator would normally blink, if it works, your done, if not, then check to make sure that the LED is secure.
7. Finally if it is secure, unplug security light panel from car, removed LED and flip 180 degrees (LED have polarity) Reinstall and test, now you should have a new blue LED security bulb. Put car back together and call it a day.
Sorry for the large picture and shitty quality - Its my girlfriends camera, what can i say.

Yeah this is, thanks for asking John.
1. take a flat head screw driver and pry off security indicator panel.
2. observe broken plastic parts from security indicator panel in hand that broke when you tried prying plastic off of a screw.
3. Complete swap as listed above
4. Reinstall broken security indicator panel with tape/glue
Steps listed above are not recommended - dont be lazy and take your door panel off.
If you know a better way, educate me. Keep in mind you will need access to a connector about 12 inches from the LED so you can take inside and work on it.

I replaced my security led way back when I went through my "MUST REPLACE ALL STOCK LIGHTS WITH NEW LEDS" phase. Cool DIY.
And for the record... ahem... you aren't the only one who... um had some extra plastic bits left over after the mod.... I feel your pain!
"Hmmm these things wont pop out.... maybe if I apply more force.... POP! Oh......"
Props again on the DIY!
