Converter removal + o2fouler installation.

I'm thinking about having the muffler shop just bypass my cat and I want to make sure I take care of my secondary o2 sensor throwing codes.

Has anyone taken care of this with a software or hardware fouler and if so how easy is the installation is it a DIY thing I can take care of with minimal knowledge or is it something I should ask the shop about if they can take care of it?

Thanks,

Yea dude, ive done it to my last car and it was pretty easy. Make sure you stop at autozone and borrow the an o2 sensor socket. try to use a breaker bar because it will be hard to get the o2 sensor loose. If you cant get a breaker bar, then just put a long pipe over whatever wrench you have. 2 feet should work with a 1 in diameter.

Those DIY always show the O2 going back into the port. Do you have to weld it into the straight pipe if you completely remove the cat? Or can you have it just hanging there? or tied to something rather..

oh, so u plan on removing your cat all together? would your mechanic notice?

I only did it because i was getting the p0420 code. I guess you could just make a hole and seal it somehow, so long as it can resist temperatures. Just make sure your mechanic wont care so you can pass inspection. It may work to just place it somewhere else hidden, then you wont even need the fouler at all.

There are no inspections here. The only thing im concerned about if the shop doesn't care about cutting it out is making sure I'm not throwing codes.

Is the only way the secondary throws codes is if the o2 levels are too low? so would it throw codes if it's just under the car somewhere?

the rear oxygen sensor monitors the amount of oxygen in the exhaust stream, so "letting it hang under the car" will do nothing. You have to trick the oxygen sensor into not seeing as much of the exhaust stream. you cant just take it out.

The purpose of the rear oxygen sensor is to monitor the oxygen content of the exhaust gases leaving the catalytic converter. This provides the emissions system with a way to monitor the operation and efficiency of the catalytic converter. The rear oxygen sensor measures the amount of oxygen or "peak threshold" in the exhaust gases and it follows how fast the amount of this gas (oxygen) changes.

I guess I'm looking for something you can just hook the o2 wires up to that will send back the correct reading regardless.

The other option is welding a bung into the straight pipe and just spacing the o2 sensor out of the stream with the fouler trick right?

Hmm this thread should probably be in the problems/fixes forum now that I think about it.

have the bung welded in, it's really not that complicated or expensive. Should cost you about $15 from a machine/welder shop. Then use my homemade O2 spacer trick. I posted a picture of what they look like in your other post. Actually, if you can pay the shipping, i'll send you one of the extras i got sitting here to save you time.

Or, wait a day or 2 and i'll post up a DIY for it.

The shop I was going to have do the work "won't remove the converter" so I'm currently in the process of finding someone that will.

I'm gonna buy a GReddy SP2 exhaust on Ebay (likely) and have a straight pipe ran back from there.

If anyone knows a garage that can help me out in central Indiana holler. I'm gonna get in contact with a few guys I knew from HS that are way more into cars/knowledgeable than I to see if they know any places.

You're talking about spacing it out with foulers right yea... that's probably what I'll do if I can find a place to cut the cat for me. It just seems too good of a solution to pass up in a state w/o inspections.

I kno the feeling. My cl is throwing the same code and it has my car in limp mode. So now I'm trying 2 figure out whether 2 put another cat converter on or run str8 pipe with resonator and muffler. Does anyone know how much more louder it would be that way?
