Question Whining / Whirling Sound from Engine

I was driving today and I noticed this weird whirling sound coming from the engine. It ONLY happens when the car is in motion so that makes me wonder what the problem is. About 6 months ago, the alternator starting whining when I press on the accelerator, but this sound is different and only happens when the car is moving (forward...i haven't listened for it while i was reversing)..anyways, does anyone have any idea? Do you think this is just the last warning sign from my alternator???

thanks

Its your alternator belt or the alternator itself ...simply dieing most likely. Check it out when you get a chance....make sure the tension is adjusted correctly. Also check the PS belt. Make sure nothings binding. Let me quess.......sorta sounds like a super charger in first gear ?

^^lol.... does it happen when you turn your steering wheels? b.c if so it might be that you just need more power steering fluid.

the noise occurs when the car is moving..its not anymore significant when i'm turning or going straight...it has nothing to do with the acceleration though...like when i'm going down a hill I will put it in neutral so the engine is quiet and the noise is there...and as I slow the car down, the noise slows down too. When the car is stopped, I hear no noise at all (well except for the whine of the alternator which has been happening for many many months now)

you dont have a turbonator right?

have you looked around/under the car? ex. if your splash guard is broken and hanging down its bound to make noise. check for anything that the wind could be hitting.

Good idea..but it seems too consistant to be anything flapping in the wind...its the exact same sound every time, like it gets louder as the car moves faster and quieter as it slows down...same every time..

I still have to check out the belts and stuff...I replaced the waterpump/timing belt around 120km...I can't remember if the original 'whining' sound started way back then..I doubt it..but who knows..

does it follow your rpm drops or does it follow wheel speed?

it definitely follows my speed....if i'm coming to a stop I will put it in neutral so that my engine is idling and i can hear the whirling down as I come to a stop.

when I told my father about the problem, the first thing he thought of was a wheel bearing or something similar since the noise occurs when the car is rolling...could this be true?
