Personally, after each snowfall....after it all melts and dries up. I take my car to a car wash that has under-carriage wash to get all that crap off from under the car, each time, so it doesn't build up.
I usually wash and wax my car myself, unless it's super cold, I'll take it to a car wash. I also tend to follow other drivers less closely cause of the sand and bits of gravel they kick up.
Then about April, I'll take it to an expert detailer for "Spring Cleaning".
Other than that, there's not much you can do to avoid the winter grime, if you have to drive...unless you have a junker to drive around in the winter time.

I live in Indiana and my Silver CL is now almost completely white cuz of all the snow we've been getting..its snows like every 2 or 3 days and inches at a time..so no time to wash my car..but i just use turtle car wash and spray the bottom of the car to wash all the salt, dirt, and snow off..after a nice long wash that has wax in it, its nice and shiny once more for 2 more days till more snow..but once i move to NC, i wont have to worry about all this snow..good luck..in Northern VA it doesnt snow much there either..but its ruff when a silver car turns white cuz of snow.. good luck..
