What are are those different modes?

This may sound like a dumb question but where the gear selector is there is D4 and D3 and 2 and 1. What are the differences between them and under what situations should I use them?

You have a 4 speed manual transmission. Those are each of the gears, if you want it to stay in a lower gear for some reason you can use it. Its not really beneficial to use it manually while racing, just put the pedal down.

I know that when I put it in 1, it takes 1rst gear, and when I put it in 2, it takes 2nd gear. How about D3 and D4. I normally drive in D4 and I know that I'm not in 4th gear all the time?

If you put your car in D4....from a stop it starts in gear 1...then goes up to gear 2...then goes up to gear 3...then it rests in gear 4...if you put it in D3...then it would stop at gear 3 until you moved it up to D4..then it would most likely shift to gear 4...hope that made sense..

I'm not sure on this trans, but in a lot of older overdrive trannies should be kept in 3 when cruising around town. Leaving it in 4 might cause unneccesary stress on your overdrive clutch cause it will shift between 3 and 4 a lot. And you will also drive 4th at very low RPMs.
