I know people swear that nitrous is the best bang for your buck, but that is only initially. The bang for your buck continously declines because you keep having to refill the tank. Yes you do start out with 75hp/$500, but over a few years, assuming you fill up your tank once a month (for $40, assuming you don't live in miami) it becomes $1500/75 hp and just keeps getting worse and worse. So, consider that in the bang for your buck discussion. Theoretically, in the long run it becomes the worst bang for your buck (that would probably take many, many years of heavy use)

Don't get me wrong, it's a fun toy, but has it's economic drawbacks.

Given the mods available for my 3.0, nitrous is my best bet.

Putting on a turbo or the supercharger is simply way too expensive! $3000-$5000+ (plus installation and tranny rebuild) is too much up-front cash.

Even if either of these were an option, I can't see myself using the maximum power of these mods every moment I'm driving. I probably would only use these in racing situations or on the track.

CAI is a good mod to have, but it doesn't yield more than 10 hp.

Venom 400 is questionable, and doesn't add more than 10-15 hp (there's no dyno results to support this).

There are several bolt ons that we can add, like $1100 for headers (15-30 hp--depending on who you believe ), Cat-back exhaust $400+ (hp gains = ???????), etc., etc.......

For me, having an initial $500+ investment (plus $40 a bottle)in N2O, gets me 55-65-75+ hp. Again, I don't run with my nitrous on every moment I'm driving. I use it in racing and track situations.

For me, this is a very worthwhile endeavor. 60-65% of my driving never even takes me into VTEC range, let alone the need for additional horsepower. I'd say that 5-10% of my driving time is actually spend in a speed range that warrants power above what my engine can produce. So, for that 5% of the time I need extra power, the N2O works great!

I can't see spending $5000 for 5% of my driving time; but that's just me!

Right now, I have an extra 75 hp on demand!

what does removing the power steering belt have to do with an HP increase?

hey dust, how often do you use it during normal highway or street driving? I would just like a lot more power off the line and during acceleration. A turbo or sc would be nicer (although so much more $$$$$$$) because you would be getting that benefit always. Although the full potential of the turbo requires higher rpms, you're still getting something in the midrange. Plus I drive less on highways than street roads, so I wouldn't be able to spray on local roads in midtown.

You still need to get out of the car and open the bottle first, right?

I have the bottle open every time I drive more than 10 miles or so (or I'm looking to pick a race). When I'm in downtown DC, the roads are so bad, I would't even run in VTEC range for fear that I would damage my rims. Otherwise, my trip to and from work is 80% highway.

Since the nitrous doesn't "kick in" until you hit WOT, I can run the car pretty hard without "wasting" nitrous. If I'm looking to run at WOT, but don't want to use the N2O, I just turn the arming switch off.

I may considering getting a remote bottle opener so that I don't waste any N2O that flows into the line each time the bottle is opened. Having the remote bottle opener will allow me to cut down on wasted N2O.

I rarely find the need to run nitrous on the highway. I use it the most at the track, or near my house (racing from stop lights). Otherwise, my car has plenty of power for passing, etc. during the course of my normal travels.

BTW: I'd love to have a turbo or SC, but I won't spend that kind of money right now. Maybe in the future????

About every 2-3 weeks. It really depends on how often I hit the track.

EDIT: Ricdog; sorry for hi-jacking your thread!

Another successful hijacking

Filling up would just be too much of a bitch for me because I would have to go to the place on weekends and being productive on those days is nearly impossible.

When you launch your car off the line what happens if you were to floor it? ouldn't the nitrous kick in then and just spin the tires? Is it even safe to use Nitrous off the line? Sorry for whoreing this thread.

I haven't run the 75-shot at the track, yet! [Read my sig.]

With the 55-shot, I used the power-brake method, and had very little wheel spin--my tires are very sticky.

I imagine there will be some more wheel spin with the 75-shot. I've been told to have the system disarmed when you first punch it, then arm it a second later.

It'll be trial and error, until I get it right!

Time for another hijack

AtlCl, there's a move-in special at your condo until July 22, me and one of my boys are thinking about moving there into a 2 bedroom place. They're giving the first 3 months of a 12 month lease for free, so its cheaper than normal. Point is, if we get one, I want to mention your name cause you'll get 500 bucks for it. I'll split it with you, so we each get 250 (don't worry, i won't tell my other roommate). If I do, we can have a first gen meet in the parking deck
