Two-tone interior....

I have always been jealous of the nice dual color interior that comes with the "parchment/taupe" (or whatever it's called) CLs.

So I desided to made my "charcoal" two-tone.

I started last night and only have to complete the dash.......I need to post a how-to question on removing the dash wood and such.......

Anyway, here is a before and after pic.......sorry for the poor picture quality.......tell me what you think.

And I will be posting a full set of quality pics after I finish the dash.

BEFORE

AFTER

BTW......this was very easy, I just used Flat Black, vinyl/plastic spray dye........$4 bucks a can......I've done all four panels and still have 1/2 a can left.

No, Just the top half of the dash.............shouldn't be too hard.....it doesn't take but one light coat of the spray.

thats pretty nice... does it make the vinyl hard at all?? or does it keep that nice squishy feel?? I would hate to see it start cracking or peeling!! I'd also like to know where that stuff can be found.

The panels feel the same as before.....stiil soft. I don't think they will crack! The stuff doesn't rub off either. I even tried cleaning one of them with windex, figuring I may over spray on them while doing the windows, and there was no black residue on the towel.

I bought the spray at a local auto store. Some we have here are Pepboys & Autozone. $4.00 a can. It was "Flat Black" and the brand was DupliColor. I originaly purchased a can of Plastikote "Flat Black" and sprayed one panel. It came out very glossy so I went and bought the other brand and tried it. It was much better and I re-coater the first door panel. It came out just like the others. According to the can, the stuff soaks in and bonds with the material, so it won't flake or rub off. It works on the hard plastic too, I started doing the other dash pieces.....vents and such.

Just make sure you thoroughly clean the parts!! Once the top was separated from the panel, I washed it using dish soap/water and a nail brush. This is especially important if you use any of those dash sprays like Armoral. You may want to even wipe them down with rubbing alcohal. If the dye cannot penetrate the surface, it will wipe right off.

Good luck!!

I couldnt' help but notice, that your 98 door panel is just one color. I have a 99 and the door and dash is two tone. The bottom is like a tan color and the top is a dark tan, or of a brown color. Maybe the 99 is different, not sure. But have you tried it on your leather seat? to make it match as well?? cause i don't mined doing my seats so it could be two tone.

I thought the same thing at first but if you look at the seam that is normally covered up by the side of the dash when the door is closed you can see the difference (the part of the door closest to the front of the car)

Everyonw w/ tan interior has two-tone......all '98-'99 charcoal interiors are single color.

I haven't tried it on the seats and I don't plan on it.....sorry.

Again I'm sorry for the shitty pics.....I just finished the dash and I will try to take some good pics tomorrow....in the sun.

Thanks guys!

Hey if any of you try this yourselves, just tape of the wood trim that goes around the A/C controls. Like Ross said, it will break. There are two screw that connect the Climate Control panel the the back side of the wood and there is metal in the way of getting the screws out. You have to break it, to get it off.

According to Suspension Techniques they are the same from 90-97.

But last I checked, the damn things are still on back order. And I ordered them about 3 months ago.

'98-'99s already come with the wood around the shifter.

No it actually goes around the gear shifter and the D 2 etc etc indicators. I has like two ovals in it (one for the shifter and one for the indicators) and a circle for the shift lock

It was not fun. I too thought I could just take the dash out......yeah right!

I dyed it in place. Take out the vents gauges and the wood where the sun-roof button is.....you can get to the two screws for the wood by removing the plastic below the steering wheel. the dash tweeters just snap out.

I taped off the end of the dash and used a plastic drop cloth tucked behind the top of the dash and windshield. Just spray light coats so it won't drip on anything else!

I've had breathing problems for 3 days b/c of the fumes.....use a mask if you can get one.

Good luck!!
