True or False
True or False
I had my stripped bolt taken off my EGR yesterday at my friends Nissan dealership. I wanted to take it off because the CEL came on for EGR. He told me that once I get it cleaned out to bring it back to clear the code. I told him that I just had to unplug the battery. He said that thats an old myth. He told me that it does not work. You have to physically clear the code with the computer. I was in a hurry and didnt want to argue with him. However, I believe that it is true on nissans because I have seen that with my own eyes that unplugging the battery will not clear the code, but I dont believe that it is true with Acura's because I have used that battery method (lol) to clear my CEL when my oil pressure drops and the CEL comes on due to lack of oil pressure to activate the Vtec.
So..........
Resetting CEL on an Acura by removing battery cable.. True or false.

i'm sure you know, but if your are trying to fix your EGR problem removing the EGR itself wont fix it. You'll have to take the intake manifold off. pm me if you need the DIY. I might have even posted it up in our forum before.

you wont have the light, but it will still be there, so in that sense, "false"

When my Integra was having issues, I checked the LED on the Computer and it was throwing a code, but I had already cleared my check engine light. So yes, it clears the CEL but the computer retains the issue and when there is a CEL the computer switches to the default position for the issue. If your EGR is throwing a code, it may be switched to default values and retained in the computer.
Although I state that, it may not be retained in the computer, since your car is a lot newer than my Integra was...
Best bet is to ask a mechanic at the dealership if clearing a CEL (battery method) will also reset the thrown code saved in the computer.
True, cutting the power for 30 seconds will clear all stored codes.
Codes on an Acura ecu are stored in a flash ROM.
The flash ROM will not clear if you do not give it time to cool... IE, 30 seconds.
However, If the problem has not been fixed, the code will return. If you wanted to trick the ecu into thinking the EGR was fixed, you would have to use something to simulate the proper return signal (voltage and ohms). But this would not be a true fix, only a mask.
Good luck.
Oh, and yes, a scan tool can clear the codes as well.
I do not know about NISSAN. They may use a completely different ecu configuration.

Random thought...
I just remembered that with my Integra's computer, there was a jumper port that you had to utilize to clear the codes from the computer. I don't have a Helms, but our cars may have this if it is needed to clear them and not just the CEL...

You use a jumper wire to make contact with two of the pins in the OBOII connector behind the ash tray. I can tell you which ones if you want, I just have to look it up when I get home.

Oh, I know about that trick. I'm a computer geek,
when I hear jumper, I think of jumpers on pins and thought u were talking about jumpers on the ECU board

Aj, let me know which pins and ill just go that route.. Thanks.
Removing the BackUp fuse ( 7.5A fuse) is easiest reset method. Disconnecting negative battery post works also. Both are equally effective.
Make sure you have the radio code before resetting, otherwise you'll have no radio until you can supply the code.
good luck
-Texashonda (found this in SEARCH) It pretty well somes it up.
If you really want the pins, I will have to find that info later. You might search around on the board.
