tried to get a 99 cl today...

It was at a small used dealer, and this guy would NOT budge on price. It had 90k on it, scratches all over, he said the trans was rebuilt, but couldn't prove it with any paperwork. The emergency brake was loose, wood grain has some issues, a spider dent about the size of a softball on the rear bumper, rip in the drivers seat. I couldn't believe this guy would not consider anything under $6000, pissed me the hell off! it took me a long time to find a cl under 100k in my immediate area, and I was really hoping to drive away with it for no more than $4500. Oh well...:angryfire

Yeah i told him. I even showed him the galves report was $3950 true market value. (galves is the book dealers use to determine value before their mark up, my buddy was a carsalesman)

just a complete joke and a waste of time. Two hour drive roundtrip to see this asshole and he would'nt budge at all. He claimed to have paid $1800 to rebuild the tranny but couldn't provide service records of it because he "had his friend do it and I'm just gonna hafta trust him"

Yeah I am, though not for a cl sadly. There aren't many quality ones left in my price range in the Chicagoland area. But on the upside, I just got off the phone with a retired cop selling a 99 crown Vic police interceptor with only 53,000miles for $3900.And HE has full service maintenance records!

I'd say keep looking for a CL, way classier than a crown vic. That dealer is an idiot and probably won't sell that car for that price anyway. Did u want a 3.0 only?

I wasn't partial to a 3.0 only, but as I researched more and more about the cl's and their trannys, I decided to shoot for a 99 because it seemed like the 2nd gens had the most tranny problems (unless i'm mistaken) and the 97's looked a little plain and usually had high ass mileage. in fact, pretty much all the cl's in a 300 mile radius had high mileage.

I just finished school for audio engineering, and currently work only seasonly in chicago for the union setting up all the concerts and festivals while i build out my studio. I live way north of the city, so my aim was to buy a car outright for about 4500 that was good on gas. But the cl was like the ONLY car i really wanted to shoot for. all other coupes look too small for a big guy like me, so after returning from the dealer today i thought, maybe a honda civic coupe? nope, i'd feel lame drivin it after awhile and i'd hate to have a car for the next couple of years that i hate to drive solely because its excellent on gas and lasts long. so, i decided to part with the great gas mileage dream and just find something that i will like and will be reliable if well taken care of. and thats when i came across the vic, i called the guy, and he told me he retired and wants to move to arizona, thats why he is getting rid of it. now i know cop cars have great maintenance records because they service the shit out of em, but the only thing that worries me is the low mileage believe it or not. If it has that low of mileage, why isn't it still being used to pull people over?

anyway, if anyone else has any good ideas for a reliable car to look for with under 100,000 miles, or any secret cl's being sold in IL with under 100,000, let a brotha know.

I'd say look for a 2.3 CL 5 speed, with those you wouldn't have to really rely on mileage to gauge the condition of the car. I bought mine with 112k on it and it was smooth as silk, as those 4cyl 5 speeds can run forever. Even the 3.0's run really well, the only issue is really the tranny on those, and thats not every v6. So i think you should be a little lenient on the mileage.

I was actually looking at crown vics for a while. You can definitely find excellent deals on them. I would love a detective's interceptor with pristine paint.

Yes, I would completely stay away from those auto CL and TL's

I agree. The most important thing when buying an old car is not what the odometer reads, but the condition of the car.

My 3.0 has 170,000 miles on it and had the transmission rebuilt 3 months before I bought it so... The car had never had a tune-up in its lifetime as far as I could tell, just oil changes and the timing belt done. After I gave it a tune-up it runs like new. I'll admit that tune-up included pulling all the injectors to clean gum off/out ofthem (Thank you Ethanol).

My thoughts exactly. Especially a white one with those mopish wheels.

In my experience, everyone gets out of the way for suspicious crown vics. I like to think I have a keen eye for unmarked cars, so a lot of times everyone will be moving out of the way and not passing it, then I come by doing a bit over the limit and look back to see a huge line of cars way back there, all following some old dude with blinders on

Shoot, I saw a cop trying to be a sneaky ass one time. He slowed down to like 58mph (65 zone) and I just watched as everyone backed up behind him... I laughed as I drove by at 65 too...
