Transmission...again
Transmission...again
So very very angry.
The first transmission went on my 1997 3.0 at about 75K. It started shifting late, then jerking, then slipping. So I went out and bought a used tranny with about 48K miles on it. It only had a 1 month warranty on it
( but the price was right) and now, at 79K miles, it is slipping between first and second. This is exactly the same way the first one started and I'm getting the feeling that this one is about to go too. I plan on bitching out the guy who sold it to me first, but that probably won't do me any good. My next plan is to go after Acura (again). This is ridiculous to have so many trannys going so young. If you have a 3.0 and have gone through your first tranny at under 100K miles could you sound off and let me know if this is a fairly common problem or if I just have really shitty luck. I have no performance mods outside of a K&N drop in, so there's no excuse. I've been so gentle with it since the first one died. Anybody have any suggestions for dealing with this? Is it too late for a tranny cooler? Anybody want to buy a 97 3.0 with decent mileage?
Hey there,
My transmission slips in all gears when upshifting. It shifts late, jerks and slips everytime. However, to just alleviate the problem a little I let the car sit idle for about a half an hour everytime and after about 10 minutes of driving it shifts fine.
However, this past week it has gotten so bad and I'm afraid that any day now I'll be left without a CL to drive. The car literally shuts off everytime it shifts into first gear. It's starting to act up real bad.
I blame Acura for these problems but since they're are too many I think they're afraid of losing so much money trying to fix it. Therefore, I guess we're sh*t out of luck.
By the way my car has 83,000 miles on it which is not any where near when a transmission should fail!
I've been told that what goes wrong with our transmissions and that of the V6 accords are the torque converters, and it's common that these late shifts, slips, and jerks are caused by a "converter lock-up." And if so, I'm really considering of getting one custom made, it would be much less in the long run than having to replace 4 transmissions as someone on this board has.
I'm just saving up first, and see how everything goes from there, but as of now I'm just driving my car until she dies and then I'll worry.
I don't think I helped any and I apologize that I didn't but I just wanted to share my part and let you know you're not the only one and that these problems are very common.

Thanks for the confirmation, James. I've spoken to the folks at Acura NoAmerica and they won't even acknowledge that there's a problem. If mine goes anytime in the near future I'm going to talk to that customer service guy again and really go after them. I may even put his phone number up here on the board if I can find it - I'd love to see him have to answer calls from everyone here with an early tranny problem.
Fury - I tend to drive real easy on the car, and it's usually only me and my girl in it. Sure, I'll punch it coming on the highway or to pass, but other than that I don't race and I don't stress it much. And again, no power mods...
