Tranny's Rough

Hey everybody. I've been noticing that my tranny doesn't shift as smooth as I think it should. If I raise the revs to about 3000, it kinda pushes you into the next gear. Also on the downshifting, you can actually feel a clunck. I was just wondering if there was anyway to get the transmission to shift a little smoother. I haven't had the tranny fluid flushed yet and the car (a 3.0) is almost at 60k.

Any ideas?

i would suggest you to let the car idle for a few minutes b4 you drive it so the tranny can warm up a lil, especially in these colder weather.

Drive in D3 around town. D4 only for highway. Its ALOT smoother. Our 3rd clutch pack sucks.

Change the fluid.

Mine was shifting exactly as you described. Had the fluid checked... the mechanic said it was a little dark... changed it... and now it shifts just like new.

If you're due to change it, it would hurt. In my case it solve the rough shifting. There are always other factors.

I was always told that transmission fluid should be as clean as possible.

Our trannys are garbage - I'm on #2 at 80K miles and never race. Do a search here in 1st gen and you'll see...

Mine was starting to get rough, took it to the dealer, they changed the fluid and the tranny was gone in 2 weeks. My new tranny is doing the same thing and I haven't touched it and it has lasted 3 months so far. Take what you want from it, but sometimes flushing the fluid stirs up all that crap in there. I'm also starting to suspect that it may be an electrical issue with the shift timing from 1st to 2nd...

Yeah but you shouldn't have let it get to that point. Your mechanic should warned you that you may have crap stired up and it's not completely flushed... and to return in a few days to complete the same process, so that you do get most of the crap out.

Don't know if this is true or not, but according to my local honda dealer they don't actually fully flush them, which may or may not be the problem. He said that they can only remove a percentage (60%-80% or something) at a time. Then they fill it up with new stuff, cycle it, and get another ?% out. The way I see it that leaves the "heavier" particles down in the case only to be stirred up while driving. Who knows. After dealing with Acura on these trannys I'm done. Still love the car though and wish it could last forever.

I got the car use and was told that it was current with everything.

My mechanic was Clair Acura here in MA - fockers should have said something instead of refusing to do anything about when the tranny shit the bed at 70K miles.

That's why you can't get 100% out at a time - you can do it at home if you get the pump thingy - they sell them at boat stores for inboard engines/oil changes.

So where would be the best place to get the most thorough tranny flush?

i think acura just drains some and refills it. plus its expensive as hell. i though perhaps jiffy lube or pep boys did it. there's also a place called budget lube here (i don't know if its a nation chain) and they have a "t tech" system. i'm not too sure how well they flush the tranny either. any ideas?

Some mechanics have the Bilstein Automatic Transmission Service machine. I think it costs $85.00 for the complete service.

Guys - you DO NOT want to use one of those machines. The Acura way is the best way: drain and fill. NO PRESSURE!

As with any device or machine, you need to find a properly trained person to work on your car (if you're going to have someone work on your car besides yourself).

Some Acura dealers may even use the same machine, or something similar.

Yeah, mine has been getting really rough recently as well. I'm hoping to flushy my tranny fluid when I have time during the upcoming holidays. I think it was Got Rice who recommended driving in D3 within the city and d4 on highway. Are there any relative speeds at which I should switch to d4? What exactly do you mean by city? 55/60? I have been using D3 recently and have noticed it is a bit smoother.

I paid $65 to have them change the fluid. Of course my transmission failed completely after a month, so go figure. Fucking Acura.
