Timming belt, what do you think is going on?

97' 2.2L Manual with 125k miles

I got the timing belt changed at a local shop a few months ago, ~$400
-I believe he said he broke the bolt to the auto tensioner in the process. (He got it replaced to).

After that, I have had a bad oil leak, and a whinny sound coming from my engine.

I got my oil changed and they said that they thought the oil leak was coming from the timing belt, so I took it back to the guy who did my timing belt, he check, and said it was the oil pressure valve and fixed it. That seemed to be correct, because I'm not leaking oil, but he had no clue about the sound.

I have not driven it more then 30 miles in one sitting since I have heard this sound.

The sound: You only hear it with the car has driven 10 miles or more (after it is warm). You also only hear it with the car is idle'ing. You also smell a burning smell, and I at first just thought that was the oil burning from the oil leek, but after washing me engine I now can tell it’s a burning rubber smell. The sound also gets louder the more you drive it. (For this reason that it has to be warm to hear it, nobody hears the sound, because my car sits there at the shop, and they start it cold.)

I took it back to the shop where I had the belt done, when it was making the sound, he had no clue what it was....

So I took it to the Honda dealer, and right off the bat, he says it’s a bearing... So I made an appt. for them to look at it. I get a call today saying:

we finally got the sound going... in fact he said "howling" and they think that it is the 2 tensioners on the timing belt $150 parts + $300 labor ="about $450, or so"
so.. What do you all think before I let them do anything, on my answering machine they also talked about the water pump?

I don’t know what to think, I am getting really annoyed and I don’t want to spend another $400 replacing the belt again, if that is not the problem. If it still makes the sound after they do all the work, what do I say... umm I want my money back you didnt fix it?

I'm really at a loss here and loosing my loving feeling for my car.

first, don't get it done at a honda dealer. Get teh car back from them and take it to a regular mechanic and have them do it. I'm sure the cost of labor will be less than half of the dealer price. You should get an invoice thing from the dealer and take it back to the guy that did it and tell him to replace them for free csince he broke them in the first place, and he should be responsible for FULLY repairing the damage, not just replacing the parts.

See if your belt has any abnormal wear. Also the mechanic may have over torqued the tensioner bolt.

the bolt can be over torqued and not affect the tensioner, cause the tensioner is kind of like a bearing where the outside spins and the inside stays still.

Take it back to the first mechanic and tell him to fix it again! I would not settle for paying for the same job twice. Did you tell the first douche/ guy what the dealer said?

update:

I just got the work done at the honda dealer....

$475 later:

Here is what the bill says:

Both the timing belt tensioners (adjusters) are making noise or exhibiting signs of having a bad bearing. Install both timing belt adjusters on vehicle.
Please dont flame me for staying with the dealer..... I know I know (thats why I didnt go there to begin with)

So now if anyone else is having the same problem... this is what it is, my car is so nice and quite now again.
