For those w/5spd

After how many miles should I replace the clutch? My car has 72k on it and a lot of times I get hung up on gears too easily and it doesn't feel like it's grabbing right. When I launch, either it bogs too much or doesn't catch right. Help out if you got some info. Thanks

BTW I know it's not me, I launched my Altima the same and it launched a lot better.

I've got the same car with 10K less miles, wondering the same also. When a clutch is slipping does it happen with every gear or just certain ones?

Mine slips just at launch, sometimes 1-2.

FODE: Would any of this be under warranty? I'm guessing the actual clutch isn't. Should i just get an aftermarket clutch and have the dealer install it?

i got 72 k on my car also... the clutch isnt covered because its regular wear and tear on the car. it should be fine tho at 72k. mine still grabs.

the synchro's are going, that's another different prblem.

i have a hard time launching my car at the track. best i can tell you is drop the tire pressure to 20 psi and launch at 3500rpm.

Are those covered do you know?

Also do you just drop the clutch at 3500?

Dumping the clutch at 3500 will not work in this car. To get a good launch, you have to modulate the clutch while you're launching. In other words, you are burning your clutch slightly to 1) Keep your RPMs high to prevent bogging and 2) to prevent wheelspin.

The clutch is NOT a warranty item nor are the synchros. If you can't get solid chirps shifting into second gear, then your clutch is going. You will also feel the RPMs rising without the car accelerating like it should. If your synchros are shot, it makes it difficult to shift into a certain gear. Each gear has its own set of synchros. Sometimes you might also get a grinding sound as you try to shift into a gear.

I definitely cannot get solid chirps 1-2, I never have. Maybe I'm shifting weird.
I definitely DO feel rpms rising and the car doesn't accelerate, then I smell the clutch smell a bit.
How much for a new clutch (factory)? Should I get an aftermarket one instead?

aftermarket will be cheaper but won't last as long.. plus it'll be stronger then a stock clutch.. i'd go aftermarket and install it yourself its easy

I had 100K on mine when I put in the ACT. Stock clutch looked fine and like it had another 50K miles to go.

Driving the way I did on it, I dont see anyone having problems related to a clutch going out.

Sprayers might have trouble.

re: 5 speed shifting problems

Since there are no clutch adjustments on your car, check to see if your clutch master and slave cylinders are leaking (check the one under the dash first). The seals may be shot in one of the cylinders allowing fluid blow-by. This could cause your clutch to engage at different levels of clutch pedal travel. Clutch problems are a pain because they are often intermittent.

Getting the tranny "flushed" might help. That means flushing out the clutch fluid and then filling it up with new, just like flushing your radiator fluid or any other fluid in your car, it needs to be kept clean. Look in your clutch fluid resavour (how the hell do you spell that??), to see if you are low on fluid. If you are, DOT 3 Brake fluid is what our car takes. It is located under the hood with a green cap driver's side top corner. Wow, first post in a while, I cant word shit right. That looks like a 2nd grader wrote that... Oh well.

Cool , i chirped a bunch of times today so i guess everything is copasetic. You guys recommend high mileage motor oil and/or fuel injector cleaner (my CL has 72k) or is that stuff a waste of money?

For the minimal added cost, high mileage oil and the injector cleaners are worth it, IMO.
