Temperature guage maxed out...

Driving home from work- in traffic. I looked down and noticed that my temp guage was pinned on HOT. I pulled into a parking lot: Overflow tank had AF... I eventually popped the cap of the radiator (no pressure at all) and it was full as well. 15 minutes later, the temp went back down and i drove it home- an hour- no problems.

Just wondering what ideas anyone might have... I just replaced the water pump 20k miles ago (oem)... I'm thinking thermostat- possibly some kind of electrical problem...

I'm about to flush out the system- the fluid is over 100k old. I'm def. gonna get a new cap. I guess i'll start there but... anybody experience something like this?? Thanks- how bout an idea or 2? I'm reading the bible right now to see what ideas it may have.

Thanks for all your help fellas...

I just drained the ATF and got myself a new cap. It's flowing through the system so i'm gonna just keep a close eye on it. We'll see what happens. Maybe i got a falty thermostat.

Thanks again.

HAHA... yeah, i heard it works better than antifreeze... I know it was only posted for a sec but it was the only day i had to work on it so i was hoping to get some insight... Sorry for the hostility.

Well- incase anybody was wondering... it hasn't done it again- YET... Maybe something got clogged or it was a freak thing- we'll see. I hope, if it's the thermostat, it overheats this week so i can change that this weekend cuz i got a long drive coming up in a couple weeks.
