Temperature Error: About to just give up :'(

So, my 97 2.2 has been running w/o vtec and in "fuel-rich" mode (according to the stealership) because there is some sort of problem with the ECU knowing the temperature of the car. Other then lack of VTEC, the only other symptom is the temp gauge, no CEL or any codes being thrown.

So I've attempted to fix the situation by replacing (what I think) is the relevant temperature sensor (based on what Acura said) and the temperature sender unit, and still no luck. I'm starting to think there's some faulty wiring somewhere or that I'm just doomed to live without my precious VTEC

Any thoughts?

It could have something to do with the thermostat but I really don't know. Do you have the service manual for the car?

How do you know the VTEC is inoperative if there is no code set (No CEL)? Any driveability symptoms? How do you know the car is running rich? Is it fuel consumption excessive?

Are you sure it was an Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT)sensor and not Intake Air Temperature? A bad ECT will set a code, as will a bad IAT sensor. I frankly doubt this is your problem, but w/o more info I can't help.

I would suggest pulling the vacuum line on the fuel pressure regulator and sniffing for fuel. If you smell fuel strongly, the fuel pressure regulator diaphragm is ruptured and leaking fuel into the engine. This will cause a rich condition, excessive fuel consumption, and no CEL.

good luck

from what i have heard if your ECT sensor is unplugged or non functioning your vtec will not work, try replacing that. If that doesnt work replace the thermostat.

If your thermostat does not open up, then all the coolant sits there, never able to decipate heat through the radiator.
