SQ in 98 2.3
SQ in 98 2.3
Hi guys. I've enjoyed reading everyone's posts, now I'm steppin up. I have a 98 2.3, basically stock except the sound system. Eclipse head, Infinity kappa 5 1/4s in the front, Kappa 6x9s in the back and 2 Pioneer impp dvc 12's in the trunk. The problem is, I get hooooorrrrrible vibration in the trunk area from the subwoofers. I've never heard anything like it... and I can't figure out where the hell its coming from. IT orgiinally seemed to be largely the stock grilles from the rear speakers, but I took those out and I'm still getting it... help! Thanks.
Welcome to the site!
It's good to have another Marylander on board (I'm from Gaithersburg)!
I get the same thing. I've just learned to live with it.
You could install Dynamat, which should dramatically reduce the vibration.

There's so much rattling I wouldn't know where to put the dynamat. It drives me nuts. I used to have a Saturn.. I could at least find the rattles and smother them in there. IT's like I went from so crappy it was easy to fix, to so nice you can't touch it.
Yea just get some dynamat..but even with dynamat you will get a little vibration unless you do it an extreme amount...I know D5C5B dynamtted his trunk twice and it still has a little vibration...but its always worth a try if the vibration annoys you that much...in my case I noticed that the bars connected to the trunk vibrated against the metal and also the rear deck...go check those locations out..

I had the same problem. I used 3 boxes of dynamat on the trunk alone. Problem resolved. Do the trunk lid also. Just make sure the area is clean or the dynamat will fall right off. I used a heat gun and molded the dynamat around the wheel wells and where the spare tire is. Worked real well. Have fun
I've seen a couple methods of reducing trunk vibration. Dynamat, like everyone has mentioned, will work great but is sort of on the expensive side. You might want to check the logical places before diving straight into dynamat, i.e. license plate and holder, screws (metal touching metal), etc. Another method I have seen was expanding foam under the trunk lining. Good results were reported and seems like a cheaper alternative. All in all, the choice is up to you, just throwing a couple possibilites.
